A light version of Skritter.com for our Phone

Tortue   May 11th, 2009 2:29p.m.

I'm not here to ask you guys to provide us a iPhone/Android App (But I really do hope you've already envisged that :p) but it would be nice to have a lighter version of Skritter.com that we can browse with our iPhone & Co.

Not actually to practice, but in fact to quickly access to the forum, check our data and especially (if it's possible) to have access to the 10/20/50 last learned characters! Indeed, I sometime (in bus, classes...etc) really would like to practice/review the characters I learnt but as I don't have computer beside, I just can't.

Is it feasable ?

Thx in advance !

This is a very common request! Actually, putting it on phones was how we originally envisioned it, and even pitched it at first. Writing the character on a touch screen with your finger or with a stylus, how would that not be awesome?

If it didn't entail so much more work we would do it immediately. Those phones don't support flash though, and so we would have to completely rewrite that part of the code in a separate language, which is a huge fraction of the code (the flash and javascript code that goes into the practice page is almost as large as the entire rest of the site). Not only that, but we would also have to maintain that second set of code, making both versions work. Basically we just don't have that kind of time; we're swamped as it is.

Having said that, an iphone app is definitely on our wish list. Nick has an iphone, and he really wants it. But we just don't have the developer power to do it. Perhaps when the core of the software is (relatively) static, and we aren't changing it all the time, then we could put the energy into making a second one, knowing that we won't have to change it much once it's made. But it's hard to tell when a time like that will come. Of course if we get oodles of money, we could just hire as many developers as needed. I would say if that happens, then we have been very successful indeed.

even outside of an Iphone app or non-flash client, would it be oodles of work to create a simple webpage where you could log in and have it show you either front/back flashcards or at least the characters you just learned (or are most due) in a large font for a quick review on the go.

At least that's how I interpret Tortue's (almost wrote torture) request.

Yes. Originally the Flash code was just for drawing stuff and maintaining some state, but as time's gone on, more and more stuff has needed to go into the Flash client, including a lot of scheduling logic and review-saving logic. We considered writing as much as possible in JavaScript instead, leaving only drawing in Flash, but JavaScript is not nearly as nice as ActionScript, plus performance would suffer.

For right now, we won't make a mobile version of the site. I just checked on my iPhone, and it was pretty easy to use the vocabulary viewer (sorting by "next" or "learned") to manually review things. The forum wasn't too bad, either. I think optimizing the site for mobile will have to wait until we make the mobile practice interface, too. Sorry!
