Using Skritter with Samsung Galaxy Tab

Keizer   May 24th, 2011 11:26a.m.

I would like to know if someone has experiences with using Skritter on Samsung Galaxy TAB. I tried, but the flash does not work properly. The workspace was half covered by a white area. Way to make it work?

jww1066   May 24th, 2011 12:25p.m.

Yes, I use it on occasion, but haven't tried it lately. There used to be a problem with the zoom levels - you had to set the zoom to "medium", load the study page, then change the zoom to "far" as I recall.

I'll give it a try later and see if there's something else going on.

I use it daily and I have never experience what you are referring too. Maybe if you update Flash and switch to a different browser you will have better results. I like Netfort's Life v2 Browser.

I'm in the process of overhauling the way the Android device layouts work. Can you send me a screenshot or photo of the layout as you see it, Keizer? Also, which Galaxy Tab do you have?

jww1066   May 24th, 2011 10:46p.m.

@Keizer I checked just now and the zoom thing I mentioned is fixed. In fact I'm not seeing what you described at all. So I suspect you have some different version of either Android or Flash.

OK, I experienced this problem twice in two shops, where I tested the Samsung, I did not buy because of that. If you report that it will work, I will make a try.
BTW: which kind of pen do you use?

I think you just have to download another browser than the standard one, I think Skyfire v4.6 beta is the best, also dolphin browser 5.2 beta is very good. This is what I did on my Chinese android tablet, I think the standard browsers often don't work. Also in the settings put it on android lay-out instead of default.

I don't know if they will allow you to download another browser to test it in shops, I doubt it. But all Android tablets should work by downloadng and changing settings

jww1066   May 25th, 2011 7:57a.m.

I use the standard browser and it works fine.

Elwin   May 25th, 2011 7:36p.m.

If the standard browser works fine on the Galaxy, then it's about the settings. Change the browser to Android interface, the default settings on my Android don't work with Skritter. The flash experience can be better if you download another browser so it's worth trying out.

Neil   May 26th, 2011 5:36a.m.

Might like to check the Android OS version, they are delivering updated units in Italy now apparently.

Keizer   May 29th, 2011 7:28a.m.

I now bought the 10.1" Galaxy Tab with Android 3.01. I loaded the flass plug in and I tried the Default Browser, the box to design the characters is very small, does not react on taping and reacts very badly on touch, overall not usable.
I downloaded and installed Skyfire, which looks great, but instead of the flash plug in it shows only an arrow, clicking the arrow, the browser crashes, :-(

Keizer   May 30th, 2011 7:44a.m.

Can anyone propose a good plugin for the Android 3.01 Galaxy TAB to get a Chinese Keyboard (Typing PinYin....)

Elwin   May 30th, 2011 8:40a.m.

Baidu Input 2.0 is great for my android, Chinese name is 百度输入法 but I don't know if it also works for Android 3.0, I think it should because they say it's for android 2.1 and higher.

If you can't download it in Android Market you can maybe google for '下载百度输入法apk'. I have the Chinese version of Android market.. Sogou is another good one, 搜狗输入法。It's also great for computers, have a try http://pinyin.sogou.com/

Did you manage to make Skritter work on your Galaxy? Does it work with an Android 3.0?

nick   May 31st, 2011 5:48p.m.

Keizer, I'm almost done making the layout be awesome instead of sucky for that tablet (I have one too), so if you can have a little more patience, I'll get it working for you!

Keizer   June 1st, 2011 1:53a.m.

wonderful! just give me an update and the indication which browser to use when it is ready

Nicki   July 13th, 2011 3:39a.m.

Have a friend possibly interested in purchasing a Galaxy Tab and then signing up for Skritter. Few questions:

1. How is Skritter on the Galaxy Tab now? Any updates?

2. How is the Galaxy Tab in general? Do you like it? What are the pros and cons in your opinion, if you have one?

3. If you've purchased the Galaxy Tab in China, what was your experience? Is it necessary to get the 3G model or does the cheaper one work with Chinese sim cards alright?

4. Anything else he should consider?

Thanks guys!

nick   July 13th, 2011 7:38p.m.

Nicki, is this the Galaxy Tab 7" or 10.1"? I have the 10.1" and it's sick, although it still has the normal Android delayed Flash touch input problem for now.

I have "fixed" the 7" layout, although it's not a great layout still.

Nicki   July 14th, 2011 11:07a.m.

7 inch. Good to know about the layout.

贺知宝   September 8th, 2011 12:25p.m.

Where does this stand?

贺知宝   September 8th, 2011 9:45p.m.

Just installed flash on my 10.1, when I try to practice, still says I need flash player. Any ideas?

Nicki   September 8th, 2011 9:49p.m.

I skritter from hubby's new 7 in. Galaxy Tab when I can pry it from his grasp (we call it the box of wonder). Works pretty well most of the time, occasionally needs a reboot. Still working on getting hubby to subscribe!

nick   September 9th, 2011 9:59a.m.

pharchik, try clearing your cache? If you have Flash installed, it shouldn't give you that message any more. You could also try the other domain (of skritter.com / skritter.cn).

贺知宝   September 11th, 2011 2:05p.m.

Thanks nick, I got it to work but there is a mean delay. I would LOVE to skrit from the comfort of my tab but the lag makes it nearly unusable. Any plans to fix this?

nick   September 11th, 2011 2:50p.m.

If you are talking about the writing delay, then try writing the character carefully but ahead of Skritter, not waiting for input to be drawn before continuing. Android is delaying the touch events and there's nothing we can do about that, as far as I know. But if you don't wait for it to draw, you can eventually get going pretty fast.

If you're talking about a delay loading characters, that's something I'll be trying to reproduce and fix on Tuesday.

贺知宝   September 12th, 2011 11:44a.m.

After I draw a stroke, it takes about half a second to appear, this makes it very difficult to write nice characters.

I remember there was a similar problem when using firefox on my pc. The problem was solved when I switched to chrome. I am currently using the browser that came with the tab, any suggestions?

贺知宝   September 15th, 2011 10:36a.m.

I have heard that Dolphin and Opera are both good. Any suggestions?

nick   September 17th, 2011 9:35a.m.

If you are looking to write really precisely, then yeah, it's going to be a pain waiting for your input to appear. I would recommend not waiting for it. If you continue writing and let Skritter catch up eventually, it's not too slow.

I haven't heard of any alternate browsers doing anything different on Android--I would guess that they all pass the Flash the touch events after a slight delay. But if you try any others and find otherwise, I'd love to hear about it.

Elwin   September 17th, 2011 10:27a.m.

I used Skyfire 4.3 which worked really well on my chinese tablet and just now downloaded Dolphin Browser 6.2 and works the same with Skritter plus is a nicer browser.

贺知宝   September 26th, 2011 6:31a.m.

I am now using Dolphin. It seems a bit better than the original web browser. Unfortunately it is still just too slow for me to get really in the zone with it. It is really too bad because using skritter on a tab would be so fun and convenient.

Nick, any plans?

Keizer   September 26th, 2011 7:04a.m.

I am using Skritter on my galaxy tab 10" with the Default browser. It is a bit slow, but not that it would become unusable. My problem is that it freezes to often in a way that it does not react on the touch. Then I have to use the preview button to get it active again.
Anyway, it has become, something, I am using

贺知宝   September 26th, 2011 7:43a.m.

yes, technically it works, but my favorite part about skritter is how quickly I can burn through a massive list of vocab. Can't do that on the tab because of the delay.

nick   September 26th, 2011 8:41a.m.

Keizer, I think this freezing is a bug with Flash player that they've fixed in Flash Player 11. FP11 is coming in early October, they say, so let's keep our fingers crossed for that hitting Android soon, too, and for it being totally awesome.

pharchik, I've done about all that I can do for now. That writing delay is part of the browser/Flash interface. I'm working mainly on getting the iOS app ready, and if that's a big success, Scott will want to do a native Android version to match it, but that would be a long ways off. FP11 might do something more awesome here, but I'm not sure about that.

贺知宝   September 26th, 2011 8:47a.m.

Thanks for the info Nick, helpful as always.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for FP11. Any estimate for when the ios version will be available?

scott   September 26th, 2011 10:30a.m.

He's super close to starting the alpha testing on it. Then the long testing and polishing phase begins, which will be for months most likely... but when that's done it'll be ready!

贺知宝   September 26th, 2011 10:41a.m.

哎哟! ok, i'm sure it will be great.
