Changing simple list to a complexe one

fangshi   May 22nd, 2012 8:13a.m.

Hey guys,

I started my first self made list a month ago with new words I learned in Taiwan outside of class.

I choose simple list at that time, because I didnt realize there is a limit of 200 entries.

Now I would like to change it into a complexe list so I can continue adding new words in sections a la: 1-200, 201-300, and so on.

But it seems like there is no feature to change the list type afterwards. I tried to "Export" my list to quickly start a new complexe list with it, but if I just copy paste the whole thing it does not work, seems like I would have to copy every single Chinese character without the "Latin stuff" on the export list.

Any elegant solution?

I can turn it into a multi-section list for you. There, the list "Taiwan 2012" is now a multi-section list.

Though, that sounds like a bug. What you did should have worked. What browser are you using? If it's an old version of IE that might be why it didn't work. Could you send me the exact text you tried to paste into the list editor so I can try and reproduce it?

There's also another solution to move large numbers of words from one list to another. Go to the words in the list, click the checkbox in the upper left corner of the table, click 'Word Actions...', and choose to 'Add to List'. Then choose the list you want to add the selected words to.

scott, you are right. I tried it again. "Export words" copy and paste the list into a new section and this time it worked just fine. I probably did something wrong last time. :/

Anyway thanks for helping me change it. So is there an option to change an existing simple list into a complete one directly?

While we are at it: Now that I have a new list with the one existing section, I would like to change its name into: "1-200", but I cannot find a edit button to change a section name. Please advice me one more time.

Thanks alot!

Good to hear it worked this time! If it happens again, see if you can figure out what makes it break and we can look into making the editor better at handling that case.

We didn't add a way to change the size of a list; it's pretty rare that needs to happen.

On the list page itself, right above where the sections are listed, click the button 'edit sections'. Then you can add, remove, change the order of, and rename sections.

Hope that helps!

Perfect, scott. Now I have changed everything according to my wishes! :D

Thanks for the qick advice. Great service. If I encounter the problem again, I let you know. But it may very well be, that it was not a error on your site, but I did something wrong. ;)
