Raw squigs

夏普本   July 7th, 2012 4:49p.m.

Recently I have started using the raw squigs option as the normal option is giving me too many hints to how to write the character. It seems though that quite often it accepts some correct shaped strokes but in a completely wrong area of the screen which confuses me and although it is accepted it is actually in totally the wrong position. Is there any way to make the accuracy stricter?

You can't make Skritter more strict through any setting, but it's very easy to simply change the ranking Skritter gives you and be strict yourself. I change the rank skritter gives me fairly regularly because I think skritter was too nice/harsh. I also sometimes also flat out guess by writing a hunch - if I'm correct I still mark it wrong so that skritter gives it back to me soon because I know in my heart I didn't "know" it.

bjnsharp, yes you can make accuracy stricter in both the web version and ios app (and you need to for raw squigs). For the web app, start studying and then click on the settings button in the top right. It's in there. The slider for the iOS app is on the main settings page...

That setting only changed strictness for stroke order, but does not make skritter's stroke checker more/less strict on position. Even if you turn that all the way up it will still let you write the correct stroke in the wrong spot. As a test I put that slider all the way to 100% and I can still write the whole of 上 in the bottom right quadrant with the strokes 2 below stroke 3 and not touching stroke 1 at all ( http://oberins.com/crazystrokes.png ). Right strokes, totally wrong location and skritter lets it right through and then animates it to the correct spot without question. Skritter does enforce some restrictions on position - I couldn't write 上 in the top left quadrant, but you can get away with a hell of a lot before it complains.

I actually like it's leniency for stroke position - on the iOS app I write strokes with my thumb all ontop of each other which is very fast but totally unreadable. As long as the direction is right it accepts it. Very handy, however if your after strictness in position I think it's up to your own discretion to enforce it.

I always have raw squigs on. When I get a new character, I usually draw and erase it over and over until it matches the template. Then I draw it a few times more for good measure. Only then do I move on to the next character.
