How to tackle a large review queue

Molndrake   September 22nd, 2014 1:47p.m.

Hi,

We have just published a new blog post about how to tackle large review queues. There are many different reasons for accumulating a large review queue, but whatever your situation might be like, this article is meant to help you deal with the problem!

I'm sure users have a lot of additional ways of dealing with large review queues and I know this has been up for discussion many times before, but what are your favourite methods? I really have 1400+ in my queue, so if someone has any other suggestions than those mentioned in the blog post, I'm all ears!

Cheers,

Olle

Well, for a huge change in my life I had more than 4000 in my queue. Then I started over (want to go to China next year) and true to the principle of spaced repetition I had forgotten almost all, even the basic ones. I found this goal mode helpful, with a goal of 400 I´m slowly in 250.

I have used the save me feature before, but I have found that for large reviews 8000+ it is not the best method.

I have found that blocking nearly all of my words and then re-adding them in 100 or so word batches a day worked well. It also gave me time to review the definitions the night before and add things to the definition (word type, context, example sentence ) that help me remember word better

Focus on reviewing one part only.

I recommend pinyin first for Chinese learners. When you're not switching between writing, pinyin, tones and definitions, you can progress much quicker. You should be able to drastically reduce your queue size after a short session of reviewing pinyin only.

Do the same for definitions and tones. If you're aiming for speed, leave writing until last since it takes longer.

This method allowed me to reduce my queue from over 1000 to 0 in a few days without skrittering for longer each day.

I didn't realise that people had queues that large! I've had a few thousand at the most. :) I think deleting or temporarily deleting (banning) is really important. Actually, deleting stuff you don't need is good in general, not only when you have a large review queue!
