Profile stats wrong

Mandarinboy   September 26th, 2011 3:39p.m.

Not important really but i just realized that the character/word stats you get when you click on an profile on the forum is wrong. At least mine are. Around 5% off. Talking about stats, there is another thing on the practice page that i do not understand. I can get the items due down to around 10 to 20 but then it stops. Percentage due is then less than 100 If i keep on practicing i get down the percentage due but not the number of items left. If i then go back to the study page it reports that i have around 10-20 items due. This happens all the time. It does not really matter since it is just numbers but in a way that is also giving me doubts if the other stats are correct or not.

The items due bar has known issues and will probably be completely redone at some point to address them. As of right now, just think of it as an estimate, not the actual number of items you have due.

I checked your totals (see your progress page in the upper right corner) and they match the ones in your profile. What we do is we see which part has the most learned (in your case tones for both characters and words) and put them in the profile. Were you thinking it was some particular part number which should have been showing?

Mandarinboy   September 27th, 2011 3:34a.m.

Why is that calculated on tones, Ok, I know more tones than words but.. Since i have not even added that number of characters i guess that tones is counted for each variation of the tone for a character in different words and on its own. Is that really representative? Might be just me but for me it seems more logical to have it on characters since the headline says characters and not tones. Well, it is really, really not important, just struck me as odd.

Speaking of stats not being completely accurate, I think that the first priority would be to have the "Totals" stats be exactly right. I am learning character/word writing and character/word tone. A new item is thus automatically added for both. When I look at my "Totals", there is, however, a significant difference between the number of items added for writing and those added for tone. This is of course not critical, but as counting is one of the strong points of computers, it would be nice to have these stats exactly right :-)

@Mandarinboy: We just have it pick the highest number; if you knew more definitions it would show those, and if you knew more pinyins it would show those. This simplistic formula is because there are lots of different ways people can study, and parts being studied and added can change, so we can't stick to one single part. The numbers themselves are rough approximations anyway, so we went with the highest ones we could show.

@swimming: It's true computers are good at counting, but due to constraints in the system it's a bit tougher to do than one might think! Nick and I are planning on doing an overhaul of how progress and other pieces of data are saved while you practice, and I think this will very much improve the counting issues. I also want to do some unittesting to try and tease out any lingering counting bugs.
