Save draft in vocab editor

Doug (松俊江)   November 3rd, 2009 7:55a.m.

Is it just me or is there no way to easily save a draft and keep working on a vocab list? I am entering my new textbook (lessons 21-40) and like to save a draft after each section.

Hmm, empty sections also don't seem to get saved (I put several chapter names in but they disappeared - not a big deal as the names are "21", "22" etc.)

We had a "save draft" button, but it was mondo confusing to have both "save draft" and "process" buttons. Now it autosaves drafts for you every few minutes, so you don't lose your work, and "save" is the new "process".

Make sense? Is there something we could add to reassure you that your drafts are autosaved?

google docs-like "draft saved at xx:yy"?

I was about to post something about the vocab lists UI though, which is that the save button seems to only be available at the top of the list. That doesn't make much sense to me as the normal thing to do would be to add to the bottom of the list. Easy fix: duplicate the buttons at the bottom. Slightly harder (?) would be to make the lists load from newest on top to oldest on the bottom. I guess maybe that could be confusing, but it definitely slows it down a bit to render the whole long list of words and then have to scroll all the way down to add something. Maybe minimized sections by default besides the last one?

I also see this problem (slow loading) with one monster list I have, so I kind of like the idea of having list sections minimized by default.

I think at some point I'm going to rework the whole tool from the ground up, but it's relatively low priority compared to the other big things coming up. So for the time being smaller tweaks are all I can fit in.

I can certainly add save and discard buttons at the bottom of the page. They used to be fixed at the bottom of the window, but we found people didn't see them, so we moved them up top to see if that was more visible to people. I'll try adding the buttons to the bottom of the page.

We can't have empty sections in lists, so it automatically removes sections when the draft is turned into a list. Could probably change that so empty sections are handled, so they can be saved.

Also, if you leave the page without saving it into a list, it gets saved as a draft before you leave, so you won't lose anything. There's no indication of that though...
