Hi All,

Apologies if this has been covered already, but I did a search and could not find an answer. Can anybody point me to a good electronic Chinese character dictionary that provides the Japanese readings for characters (when available)?

I ask, because I am a Japanese speaker who is now studying Mandarin. I passed JLPT 1 back in 1998, and I recently decided to start studying Mandarin so we could speak it with our children. I'd like to be able to find a Chinese character dictionary that says "and by the way, here is the reading in Japanese." I noticed that Pleco has a field called "RSJapanese," but it never seems to have a value.

PS - How many other folks are studying both Chinese and Japanese at the same time on Skritter?

Might be a trivial suggestion but I sometimes use wiktionary for things like that. But I have no idea how many characters it actually covers.
for example: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/謝

You could install the Rikaisama / Rikaikun / Rikaichan plugin for firefox, and then be able to hover over any character to see the Japanese reading, you could set it to do character only so it doesn't pick up the full word if you would like as well.

@tausha - thanks! Wiktionary is pretty good resource for this, and I have used it before. I don't know how many characters it contains, either. The Unihan database is useful, too: http://www.unicode.org/charts/unihan.html

@ジェレミー - I'm not familiar with Rikaisama plugins for Firefox, but I'll take look. I tend to do a lot of my study on an iPad and iPhone, though, so I was really hoping to find something that worked on iOS...

I'm not sure what RSJapanese gives, but there are two fields for readings of Japanese in pleco: Japaneseon and japanesekun. I don't study Japanese but have them switched on and they seem to have readings for quite a lot of characters.

Edit: see http://www.unicode.org/reports/tr38/ for what the different fields mean. RSJapanese seems to be an incomplete radical stroke count.

Thanks! I was just pointed to this by a member over on the Pleco forums, too. The Japaneseon and Japanesekun fields are the on and kun readings for the characters, and those work perfectly for what I need.
