New User, Quick Question!

jdthedj101   August 18th, 2012 8:22a.m.

Hey. I just started using skritter, and have a quick question. I am studying chinese, and i added the "New Practical Chinese Reader " to my study list.

But i have a question. It states, "15 reviews", and then when i study, this just keeps increasing to, lets say, 30 reviews. So when i am writing the characters the amount of reviews just keeps going up. I am confused... Can anyone help?

i also put the automatic adding of words to , "slow".

reviews means the amount of characters you reviewed.
you review them thus the amount of reviews goes up.
i have more han 10.000 reviews ...

Ok i understand. So is there a time limit on the study session? Or will it just go on forever?

jdthedj, When you first start things might be a little weird as you haven't added many characters yet.

If you add 15 characters and get those 15 all wrong, then you will have 15 characters you'll see again in a short space of time. Your due count will only drop down for a very short time, before the word is due again.

You will also be adding lots of new words, and assuming you're getting them wrong, this will mean the number of items due will also be increasing in proportion to the number of words you're adding.

On the contrary, if you start marking words as 'right', then your items due count will go down until the item is due again.

Eg, if you have 100 items due, you study the character '你' and get it right, you will go down to 99. In a week's time (or whenever) when the character is due again the due count will go up by one. If however you add 5 new characters and immediately get them wrong, they may only be scheduled for 10minutes in the future, which explains why you still have items due, and is probably what is happening in this case. That you have few items and are adding lots also explains why the review count is increasing.

There's no time limit--you can either study for as much as you feel like, or set a target for yourself of X minutes per day, or try to get your reviews down near 0--this last one isn't a good strategy at first, as it only applies when you have a bunch more words.

I may be interpreting your problem wrong, but Skritter will keep adding new words as long as you have it set to automatically add them. This means that in a study session, you might not ever drop down to zero reviews because it will keep adding things.

If this is your problem, try setting it to manually add words from the list. Then you can click the + button near the to review/added bar to add just one term at a time until you feel you're done with the session. I have to do this with my lists because I'm sort of OCD about leaving when the 'to review' is anything but zero. I like to feel like I'm done!

If you're following along with a class or textbook and want to add only a section at a time, you can go to your account-wide study settings and choose to stop adding words at the end of a section/chapter, as well.
