Continuing Learning Chinese

红羽   November 1st, 2012 3:25p.m.

So, I'm about to graduate from university and start working a full-time job, but improving my Chinese is still going to be a goal. However, I've done some searching around, and it seems that at least in the Seattle area all of the university-based courses are right in the middle of the workday, whereas the independent language schools only offer extremely low-level courses. I'm reasonably advanced, knowing 1500 characters, and I'd really like to get that up to the fluent level in the next few years.

Does anyone have any recommendations on how to find teachers or other strategies to continue learning?

Find native speakers and befriend them. in Seattle it should not be that hard. You can also create a QQ account (mainlands chat) and practice your Chinese with mainlanders.

I also recently graduated and have been trying to figure out how to keep going with my mandarin.

I live in Portland now and I found two groups on Meetup for practicing conversation. Both times I've attended have also had native speakers, so that is an easy and free way to connect with speakers in your area.

I am trying to think what else I want to do. Self study with appropriate level materials is probably the most practical, but does require a lot of self motivation. Right now I do a little reading, a little watching of videos, and a lot if Skrittering. Probably not the best balance of skills practice, but that's what I've been able to fit into my routine.

Have a look at www.italki.com, here you can find teachers and language partners. Have you ever used QQ?

Buy a couple of books about whatever things you're interested in, and read them.

I think the daily discipline is good, and that's something skritter gives me or my reviews rise. Little and often is better than a long session at the weekend.

But, if you're starting work, it will be busy, you'll probably be tired etc., so do be kind to yourself for at least a short time.
