Always studied writing only, now how to get definitions?

zhangyanglu   April 8th, 2013 7:49a.m.

Hi all,

I tried to figure out myself, as well as with the help and looking for old threads, but I don't get it.

I got the HSK 1, 2, 3 and half of HSK 4 series finished as regard to the WRITTEN study mode.

I never did anything else.
Now, how do I get Skritter to ask me for the definitions?
From the brief explanations in the help section I somehow figure I might need to add them manually for definition study mode, but I can't figure out how.

Any help appreciated :)

Cheers,

Zhangyanglu

Hi Zhangyanglu! I've made the change in your account's study settings to also enable studying definitions. If you want to poke around inside, here's a direct link to the study options page: http://www.skritter.com/account/settings-study

(You can access this from clicking your name at the top of the site next to the forum link, and then clicking "study settings" on the right hand side).

Hello Jeremy,
thank you for your reply :) I had this switched on before, for testing around, just I couldn't get it started.

The question is, how to add let's say ALL the definitions from HSK1 list (which I already studied, but only the definitions), so that immediately I get some 1xx reviews for the definitions pop up?

Ah-hah, I see what you mean now.

You could navigate to the list itself (clicking it's name), then click "Change Study Settings", keep the study mode on "Add", but then change the section it adds from to be the very first section of the list. It should re-scan over the list that way, and then prompt you on any definition prompts that had been previously skipped over.

OK, got it :) After what you did, I had to manually add them and then it worked.
Dunno why, when I tried it at noon, it said something like, there were not enough elements available or something like that.

Hello Jeremy,

I got one more question so that I better understand how the vocabulary lists are handled:

For example, HSK1 vocab list, sections 1, 2, 3. 4...
each section, when I finished it (just studying the hanzi writing), said:
Section 1: finished January 1,
Section 2: Finished February 5
and so on.
Now that I added the word definition study mode, and succesfully learned the definitions as well,it stills says
Section 1: finished January 1,
Section 2: Finished February 5

maintaining the date when I first finished the list (even if it was just the writing part).
which is very good, actually I was afraid that just for adding the stupid definitions, all dates would be reset to the day I learn the word definition.

But all this refers to lists I already had completed in the past.
What's gonna happen now in my HSK4 list, in which I still have many sections pending? If I study them with writing and word definition at the same time, or, let's say, I advance faster with the definition than with the writing (most likely, isn't it), then will the list's section be marked as finished when I complete BOTH definition and writing (per section), or does Skritter always take the writing? Or is it whatever I first finish, of all active study modes?
