Finicky hooks of 慰

KichinToJ   April 8th, 2013 7:47p.m.

I've tried writing the 6th stroke in various ways, but it seems to only recognize it if I draw it straight down (in which case it tells me it should be hooked), or if I hook it at EXACTLY the correct angle...

The 10th stroke, however, seems to accept hooks of any degree under the sun, as long as they're facing left XD

Has anybody else had this problem? D:

I don't have this character yet, just getting started. But I have seen similar things. I suspect there is some general issue here. Perhaps it is scaling, where short strokes such as the one you mention, are sent with more resolution than larger strokes. I have resorted to drawing hooks with a sharper change off direction than seems 'normal' and it usually gets me by the hook issue.

But there are still some strokes that are often rejected first try. One of them is the sixth stroke in the character for 'study or learn'. It is a short downward right stroke that seems to require a lot of precision. Yet other times I can write characters I really don't know well, but can guess well enough that it moves my strokes into position, from which I can make a reasonable guess at the next stroke.

If you can see it digiting your strokes, you might be able to watch and see how it is representing what you draw. That might give you an idea of what is going on.

Omg, the 6th stroke in 域 is giving me trouble too....
It's a conspiracy (;;゜Д゜)

Not sure what "digiting" means in this context..

Never had a problem with the hooks on either of those characters on the website or app. It could be a mouse or browser issue.

I have run across at least one more difficult character. The problem seems to be worse when in a group of small closely packed strokes. It seems the margin for error is proportional to the scale of the components of the character. For example, for a very small kou3, mouth, you have to be quite precise with the second and third strokes when drawing this sub component. I see this on my android. Not sure if it appears the same on the web, I don't use that often.

Digitizing just means that your computer, most likely Adobe Flash, has to watch where you draw and send that data to the skritter app as a series of screen coordinates. If I draw quickly I can often see my line as a series of straight lines joined together. I think where each 'join' is represents a coordinate. If you draw to quickly, I had suspected that the device you are using might miss a point it needed where the point of the hook is. But drawing more slowly does not seem to help.

I've switched out the 6th stroke and reuploaded 慰, does it work any better now?

With some components like 口, you can actually use a handwriting shortcut that might help you write quicker. Instead of writing it in three strokes, you can write it in two, where the second and third stroke are written as one, without lifting, and will look something like a Z. Other handwriting shortcuts are in 糸、or 阝, or 辶、to name some.
