Help with Microsoft Pinyin update

韩杰希   September 29th, 2010 4:34p.m.

你好我的朋友们! I'm not sure if I should be asking this question here or it would be better to ask it elsewhere, but I figured there might be someone here who is experiencing the same thing and could possibly actually understand what is going on.

I use Microsoft Pinyin IME, but I am a total beginner in Chinese. I relied upon Pinyin Joe for helping me through the install process of the new 2010 IME. However, the IME just flashed in the taskbar and this window came up with a lot of Chinese characters that I cannot read, nor am I able to copy/paste them into Google translate. I'm not sure what this window is saying, and I don't want to click anything that will screw with it, not having known what I clicked!

So, I took a screenshot of the window and dialog box that came up. Is there anyone here who can help me decipher this?

Well, my computer Chinese isn't that great, I always hate having to deal with computer stuff in Chinese, but it appears to be the following.

It is configuring your installation.

The box to the left of the screen shot is asking if you want to automatically notify Microsoft whenever there is an error.

The top of the second box is basically stating the same thing... The data collected from you is only for basic statistical purposes and to help improve customer service... They won't give out or record your personal data for more click that blue link.

The gist of it for your needs, as far as I can tell, is this. You can click 确定 on the left box to let it record and transmit what errors you have, or 取消 if you don't want to. (The old Y or N dialogue basically.)

On the right hand and much larger dialogue, things are slightly more complicated, but still not TOO bad. In the lower right hand there is a 更新 button. That is the check online if they have updates of your software or not.

Below that is the 不发送 button. That is a basic button for not sending them squat.

I only have this screen shot to look at, but it appears to be pretty safe to just hit 取消 first and then 不发送 afterward.

I take it you were installing the pinyin software and this popped up?

Thank you for your response! I went ahead and clicked the two buttons you said to click.

This actually came up just randomly in the middle of sitting at my computer. I had already installed the 2010 Microsoft Pinyin IME software a few days ago.

Thank you again!

I'm always happy to help. Glad it turned out well.

This is actually for pinyin interpretation mistakes and not Windows errors. west316 is correct but replace 'error' with this concept:

When you input a sentence in pinyin, eg wozhidao there are a number of combinations of Chinese characters that can satisfy this. However only some make sense, and furthermore only 1 is the combination you wanted. e.g. 我指导,我知道,我只到,etc. -> 我知道. Computers are good at remembering characters but don't have a clue when it comes to meanings. The box on the left will remember your preferences and learn from your style, and the box on the right lets you report these to a Microsoft database which will affect the defaults worldwide. There is a statement saying each submission will be checked, so no fun there :(

@Neil Bah. I went back and reread the dialogue box. I stand corrected. Woops.
