Character stroke order - reference books

ChrisClark   February 10th, 2009 4:35p.m.

Right now I use the tiny and portable but quite thorough (9000 characters) 新华小字典 as my simplified character reference (and occasionally it's 大 sister). I use the Far East 3000 Chinese Character Dictionary (远东汉字三千字典) as my traditional character stroke reference. My simplified reference seems like a solid choice, but as far as the second goes, there might very well be something more definitive.

So is Skritter going to have standard reference dictionaries for stroke order? It would be nice to know for sure when a Skritter stroke order is a bug or just varies from the reference work that I've chosen, and if there's a superior reference book for traditional stroke order, I'd love to know about it.

Right now, Skritter has many stroke order mistakes that we're not quite able to fix yet (because I need to create a more flexible architecture for them). There are also a bunch that have been fixed, but can't be uploaded for a couple weeks.

Skritter's attitude toward stroke order is, "allow common variations." So if it's written one order in Hong Kong or Taiwan, and another way on the mainland, or if it's a matter of personal preference, then we'll put in both orders. But other than that, users have been correcting all my mistakes. Before too long, just about everything in the system should be correct.

I don't have a stroke order reference dictionary, but I guess I should get one, especially for traditional, so I would like recommendations, too--hopefully something that encompasses multiple regions.

For now, if you're not sure, just send in a comment that says "stroke order?" on the comment box, and I'll check into it.

I was wondering about this yesterday, as I was using Skritter my girlfriend pointed out more than 3 stroke order mistakes on the website, (I'm learning simplified only). Then next time I'll leave a comment when she see's it.

I would very much like to be able to select a stroke order system to follow. In Taiwan the Ministry of Education has a standard stroke order that is used in all teaching materials in Taiwan. The aforementioned Far East 3000 Chinese Characters Dictionary also follows that stroke order standard. The MOE also has a publication documenting the stroke order but I had trouble figuring out how to get it. In any case, I've primarily studied traditional characters using the Taiwan MOE stroke order and would very much like skritter to let me select this system. The little I've used skritter I've already been thrown off course a bit by the stroke order system being slightly different for a few characters.
