Textbooks and Custom Lists

愛碧   July 3rd, 2009 7:34p.m.

Is it okay to make a custom list of a textbook not currently on the site? The only reason I ask is that I am not sure what procedure was used when creating the current lists. Just taking the words from the book seems like stealing intellectual property or something ^-^;;

Apologies for being ill-informed ~

Good question, I was wondering this too.

If we're working through a textbook Skritter doesn't have yet: Is there a format we can use, so the textbook can be added to the *Textbooks* section, as opposed to a Custom List? This might make more sense for popular texts that others are using.

Of course this assumes that Skritter doesn't have a massive staff--with interns aplenty--to compile and collate textbooks on demand :-)

I'm shortly going to put up a bunch more textbooks, but you can add one if you like and we'll convert it over to the "Textbooks" section. Just try to pick the right traditionals as you add everything.

For words that don't exist, don't copy the textbooks' definitions, though, and for any textbook-specific names, use the "Wu Hailin (a personal name)" name definition format.

"For words that don't exist, don't copy the textbooks' definitions"

I'm not sure what this means. Do you mean words that aren't currently in the Skritter database? What definition should we use, then?

If you copy the defs word for word you are probably in violation of copyright.

A lot of the words in textbooks are defined contextually, whereas Skritter wants acontextual definitions. So it often helps to look things up in nciku and MDBG, too (although MDBG often has far too many definitions). I've made the words on the add word widget into links to nciku, for quick reference.
