allow temporary parts study for all four parts

dbkluck   July 26th, 2011 10:03p.m.

Would it be possible to allow "temporary parts study" for all four parts? As it is now, if you try to check all four boxes it throws an error and won't let you do it until you've unchecked one. I'd like to be temporarily turn off adding but still study all four parts. It'd be useful toward the end of a session when I feel like I've added too many that day, but I still have a few more minutes to go to reach my time goal for the day. As it is now, I have to go over to the account tab, load up the study settings panel, reset it to manual adding, go back to the study tab, study for my last ten minutes, and then remember to reset it to account->study settings->word adding=normal when I'm done.

I guess this might offend UI-purists because I understand it's a hack (I seem to remember that turning off adding was actually an undesired side-effect of the temporary parts feature when it was first introduced, and exploiting that side effect to do something unrelated to temporary parts probably runs afoul of some design principle or something). But it would be super convenient.

I guess a more fundamental question is whether there's some technical reason why word adding speed is buried all the way over in the account tab in the first place, when most of the other similar study settings that you'd want to tweak on the fly are right there in the settings popup in the study app.

I've studied all four parts but kept adding on before. As for your other issue, I agree, it would be nice to turn off adding from the studying page if I feel I'm getting overwhelmed by new words.

This is only one click less and not on the studying page like you are asking, but I found out yesterday that on the main "Study" page (with the "Study All" button, etc.) clicking the link under "Adding Words From" (should normally say "automatically"), allows you to change the adding mode. At least it's only one click to get back to studying from there, but yeah, still not as convenient as right in the settings pop-up.

Janerl has it. Is it convenient enough to simply go back up to the study nav and change the setting from there? Also, you could just keep adding on manual and add as many as you feel comfortable with while you study, if you want more control. With that in mind, would it still be much more convenient to have the setting in the settings window on the study page?

I also like to stop automatic adding towards the end of a study session so that I can work on remaining reviews without getting new words.
Staying completely on manual is also ok, but can be a bit annoying if I just want to add a bunch of new word at the beginning of a study session.
So I think it would be great to be able to change this setting directly from the study page and definitely more convenient than going back to study nav.

Maybe you could add some kind of play/pause button next to the manual add button that switches automatic adding on and off? That wouldn't put another setting in the settings window, make it even easier to change and should be more or less self-explanatory.

I second friederike's suggestion, for what it's worth. It would really be very convenient (for me, at least) to pause automatic adding right from the study app. That said, I'm not sure my convenience outbalances the effort it would take to code it, the potential confusion to others, and general UI-clutter caused by the change. Anyway, it's much less of an annoyance now that Janerl pointed out that I can accomplish what I want with only one or two clicks back to the main study page rather than going into account settings like I was doing before.

Nick George and I talked it over but we think it's best not to add that setting to the study page itself, mainly because it would be very redundant (since it's already in two other places) and generally because it's already very busy on the study page as it is and we don't want to add anything more to it if we don't have to. Keeping things as simple as possible is pretty important.

You might try just setting your adding speed to slow, friederike. I believe that will prevent adding new words until at least the reviews you need to get done are done. Then you won't have to switch back and forth.
