Feature suggestion(s)

I know that more than I feel that some words can be spaced out to far to fast. I did actually manage to space out some really simple ones to 9 years in just one week. One way to let us go back to those earlier could be to add a new export function where we could state e.g. words that are spaced out more than 1 year or 6 month in to the future. From the exported words it is easy to create an list and cram only that list or the sections to see if we really still remember them. I have an tendency to over practice starred words and that can easily lead to words getting spaced out way to long. I think that if we then mark a word from such a list as wrong it would be put back to a more normal repetition.

Talking about exports, i think that other people have asked about export function for sentences. I would love that too while waiting for any skritter function to study sentences and patterns in an efficient way. For now I do as probably many others do and that is to create this in Anki. Not perfect but better than nothing. To be able to write whole sentences and patterns in skritter would suit me very well. I have no problem if that would require an premium account or similar.

Yet other features could be to sign up for study pals from skritter. Many users are using the same books and are on the same levels so practice together, via e.g common schedule, goals Skype comm, chat etc. could help. Maybe even group practice. I did take an distance course in Chinese Via a Swedish university last year that used very nice software to enable all students to use video/voice, whiteboard/Chat etc. Worked well. I where sitting in Japan and had 同学们 sitting in Sweden, Germany, Australia etc.

A simple on line chat to practice Chinese would be fun as well. The forum is a fun place but i still think that we all could use some more social interaction to motivate us.

Finally i would like to say that i really love the new lists system. Works perfectly for me. Really great job you did there!

No, time for me to get back to study now instead after this distraction.

I think the online practice with fellow Skritter pals would be a lot of fun.

I don't know how much access I have to a lot of the material you guys are using, but I would love to go online with fellow users and 讲中文.

I like the idea of Mandarinboy. Am I right in thinking that with an export "next to study" order you can manually do this? On the other hand, going offline for a month (or a week) you would like to export words due during this month/period to study those in paper or Anki to help the burden when going online again.

I made a "next to study" export to OpenOffice and found that my occasional memory blackouts and strict marking have kept 90% of the items under 2 month limit and those over are really easy. It would have been easy to make a list of long due items, but I found it unnecessary. But the other way, next month i have trip and surely make a list of the next to study top part. To keep that list reasonable I have to stop adding new words a week before and overpractice a little.

@Mandarinboy: For making a list of words that are to be studied far in the future, we were thinking adding an option to the my words export that will allow you to also get detailed study data, like when it's due, how long it goes between reviews, when it was last studied, things like that. That way you can make that list, and it can probably be used for anyone else who would like to examine the data in a script or an excel spreadsheet, so it's a more generally applicable solution. How does that sound?

We won't be doing sentence export, at least for now. The sentences aren't that great, and they're entirely accessible here if you'd like:

http://anymemo.org/index.php?page=databases

Search for 'dict.cn' to find it there. Perhaps when we have Tatoeba hooked into the site and allow custom sentences, then we'll consider exporting that data. The sentences will get all sorts of upgrades then.

In terms of social features, we've thought about doing those as well, but it would be a major endeavor doing the sort of study pals system, which we don't have the resources for (Nick is blocked on iPhone, and I'm working on much needed general improvements to the site). We would be interested in trying out a chatroom though. We'll see about getting that set up.

And thanks for the kind words regarding the new list system! I'm really happy with how it's come together, and just wait until you see the upcoming new quick add features. They'll be appearing very soon...

@scott, that sounds absolutely perfect. In that way i can avoid constantly nuking my account:-) I have an terrible memory and need to refresh old things that is supposed to be well learned.

I have been an customer for years and I am still amazed how much productivity there is on this site. The evolution is amazing and it really do get better and better and I and thought it where fantastic already from the start. I definitely rank Skritter as my main source for learning Chinese even though I also complement it with books, pods, conversation friends etc. In my last university exam ( just part time distance course for fun) i did go from bottom 10 to top 1. Not bad. I have always been good in reading but poor in writing but now I am actually better in writing than reading. Fantastic tool guys, hat off for all your hard work and I really wish you all the best of luck in getting this really profitable.
