Feature request: forum starring

jcardenio   February 8th, 2012 12:34a.m.

Heyo, was just thinking about something that would be really nice to have in the forum. Essentially it'd be a starring system for posts that you would like to bookmark and see again later. Like the starred words page you could have a starred posts page. Like the hsk post by mandarinboy, I'm not studying for the HSK yet, but likely will soon and would like to come back to that post. This would be more reliable than trying to search for it later and would also give you the option to sort the posts by most "starred".

Something to consider!

Skritter users provide lots of helpful links to Chinese resources on the web. This has led me to create a folder on my browsers bookmark bar solely devoted to them.

Good idea, I agree this would be a useful feature.

Forum topic starring would seem a bit redundant with browser bookmarking. Modern browsers let you search bookmarks in the url bar, which is more powerful and accessible than anything we could build. Don't you think?

I too have found many useful links here on the forums (and on other forums). I have a folder set aside in my bookmarks folder for useful Japanese links that I come across, so I just save them in there. In Firefox, you can put subfolders directly onto the bookmark toolbar, so you don't have to root through a menu to get back to them. And the best part is, I have the bookmarks synced across the network to all of my PCs, so that once I come across a useful site and bookmark it, it's accessible no matter which computer I'm on.

The disadvantage of starring posts here to come back to them later would be, well, having to come back here later. Bookmarks are such tiny files I don't think I'll ever run out of room, and as long as I keep them organized in folders they don't get too daunting to glance through quickly.

I initially thought this would be really handy, but I realise now that Scott's right - Chrome syncs your bookmarks to any PC you log in to, and I expect that others can do the same.
