Custom Words Not Appearing in App

shoun   August 13th, 2012 7:08a.m.

Hello,

I've used the iOS app quite extensively and while it's generally quite good, I'm running into a rather frustrating problem.

I will often add words which aren't in the Dictionary already, e.g. some expressions or particularly technical words. For some reason, even though supposedly 100% of the words have been added, the custom words never appear...

I'll go through the list several times, even to the point that words from older lists will come up often, though the custom words are never there. Looking at the Vocab List section, as predicted, they're also listed as having never appeared.

Is this a know bug?

Thanks!

shoun, is the list, where the words are added to, shown in the study page under "Adding Words From"?

For me it works perfect: I am always using the same list and I never stop adding; once, all the words are in the learning queue, the list is automatically removed and tagged as finished. Next time, I add a new word to this list, the list is automatically activated for adding words from this list.

I never had a problem with this, neither on the web app nor on the ios app.

Thanks for the reply.

I usually add all of the words from my list at once when I start reviewing and let the algorithm figure out the frequency to display words based on accuracy. So, the list is not in "Adding Words From", it's in "Reviewing Words From" section and the list is marked as having 100% of words active.

However, the custom words I create never show up even though they've been 'added' to the mix.

Can you give an example of one of the words that's not showing up? Then I can check it out.

Sure, here are a few examples:
相交于:to intersect with
相切于: to be tangential to
衍生产品:financial derivatives

I've also published my list 13AUG2012 for reference.

You can recreate this issue fairly easily:
1) Create a new list
2) Add some words, a mix of already existing and user-created.
3) Study list
4) Add all of the words in a batch (I add 100 at a time on iOS app)
5) notice that many of your uses-created words never show up

One other data point; this seems to be an iOS-only issue. E.g. when I 'study all lists' on PC. The user-created words which never appear on the iOS app appear immediately, as would be expected as their occurrence rate up to now was 0%.

Are the algorithms for choosing which word to display different between iOS and PC versions?

shoun, you're right, I sporadically see the same problem.
