iOS App problems on iPod

Zeppa   September 1st, 2012 6:50a.m.

I just sent you a sync report from my iPod, but I wanted to write more on a real keyboard. I use iPad sometimes, but iPod more often, and iPod when away from home. I think I have the latest Skritter version (can I tell on the device, or only on iTunes?). The iPod continues to crash - I haven't turned off the reporting of progress. When I ask it to check against the Web, it says 'progress mismatch'.
I find the time studied on the iPod is not passed on on sync, whereas the iPad time is. In addition, I just revised forty items on the iPad, then when I took the iPod later I got exactly the same items. Yet I had closed Skritter on both.

All this is what happens at home on the home network. Away from home I am offline.

Should I reinstall the iPod app?

You can find out the version of your Skritter app by going to "Help" and then go to the "About" section. On the top it says the version that is installed on your iPod. The current one is 1.0.4.

Try restarting the app (double-click the home button and then "delete" the app from the open apps). If that still doesn't work, you can also go to "Settings" --> "Account" and then click "Clear Local Data". This will erase the data stored on the iPod and after signing in again downloads a fresh version of your data from the Skritter servers. If you have however progress on the iPod that doesn't want to sync to the Skritter servers, by deleting the local data this progress will be gone too.

I think reinstalling the app wouldn't help to solve the problem better than clearing the local data.

Yes, I do have 1.0.4.

Thanks, nepumuk. I do 'delete' the app regularly - that's what I meant by 'closing'.

When I go to Clear local data, it says 'This will delete all local review data and preferences for all users registered on this device, and log you out'. Does that mean my preferences will be set again on sync? It sounds drastic.

I think, deleting the local data is the same as deleting the whole app and then downloading the app again from the AppStore (reinstalling).

All your words, their status, their scheduling time, mnemonics, etc. should still be available on the website (Skritter servers) when you delete the local app data. Also things like retention rate and other preferences should have been synched with the Skritter servers. So once you relogin after clearing the local data, you shouldn't see any difference to before but hopefully your synching problems will be resolved because you have a clean database copy from the servers on your iPod.

In case you don't have the latest app version installed, updating will probably resolve synching issues, so try that first.

Sorry, I edited the last message to say I have 1.0.4 before I saw you'd replied. Yes, I think you're right, deleting local data is equivalent to reinstalling. I did it and the app still crashes - I think this is simply an iPod problem and I don't want to turn off the reporting, which would stop the crashing.
The time studied went down from 6 minutes to 5 (6 on server), but I will have to see how it develops.

Clearing local data is almost equivalent to reinstalling, but there are certain types of bugs which reinstalling catches and clearing local data does not. Hmm. It's hard for us to tell what's going on. I wonder if you can send us some more crash reports for this specific problem?

Thanks, Nick. Things may have improved. After I installed the new version, a couple of days ago, it crashed once. Then I didn't use it much. Today I have used it for a longer time than usual, four times at home (on network) and three times outside (no wifi).
It has only crashed once. And the 'mismatch' report has gone.

The iPod did crash once, while I was at home, but this is less than usual. I have sent some crash logs, but they always seem to occur at the same time as low memory logs. The memory was shown as over 50%, but I assume the iPad has more memory and the iPod has to be highly charged to avoid crashing.
