Keyboard Shorts - Tones vs. Grading

Jeremy Peterson   April 5th, 2013 7:27p.m.

Would there be a way to implement keyboard shortcuts so we could input tones and also grade without having to click at all? Maybe holding Alt or Shift while pressing a number would grade and allow us to progress to the next page without having to touch the mouse at all. I know that would make using the web tool much more fun to use for me.

no need to touch the mouse at all. just press 1,2,3..
i just tried it.

When you are prompted to type pinyin, you end the word with a tone option. If I'm typing hao3, then I want to grade that as "too easy", I type "hao3" then hit enter, then I want to grade it using numbers, but it will just change the 3 to whichever number I'm pressing.

Basically, it changes the final tone on the word under a pinyin prompt rather than grading the word.

when you are prompted to type pinying you just type pinyin.

when you are prompted to chose the tone you use the keys 1,2,3,4 for the corresponding tones.

and after you have seen the word and you are to chose if you dont know it, know it so so, know it well or its too easy you type the corresponding 1,2,3,4.

for moving forward you use the enter key.

It doesn't work that way on my computer. If I hit enter and it tells me if I typed the pinyin correctly, and I want to grade myself by pressing a number, it will just change the pinyin on the last word in the prompt.

I've been using Skritter for many years now. It's always been this way. Was just offering an idea to improve the program.

We might be able to add alt or shift to that shortcut, but let me ask this: do you mostly want correct/incorrect grading, or are the 2 and 4 grades important? You can already press the down arrow to toggle correct/incorrect, or even using V or M to toggle it after you've submitted the word for grading once.

Well instead of adding alt, perhaps it could be reprogrammed so that after hitting enter, it will no longer edit the pinyin. That way, you don't have to add new shortcuts that people have to learn, but it's uniform throughout.

To answer your question, I guess I haven't tried using up and down or v/m, but those will work just fine for me.
