iOS - how to differentiate 简体 prompts from 繁體?

CleverClogs   July 14th, 2013 3:32p.m.

The Advanced Study panel of the iOS app settings lets you set an option to study simplified and traditional characters simultaneously.

How can I tell whether a writing prompt expects a simplified or a traditional character response from me?

nick   July 14th, 2013 5:40p.m.

In the top prompt area, in either the lower left or lower right, there will be colored indicator saying "simp" or "trad" if there is a difference between the two styles for the prompted character or word.

Nick,

With 製造 (trad.) vs 制造 (simp.), a word I currently have under study, I do not see such indicators as you describe.

Same with 夏令營 (trad.) vs 夏令营 (simp.).

Final example: 按時 (trad.) vs 按时 (simp.).

Could these be exceptions thaat still need to be added?

Thanks for your continued support!

Hmm; can you send me a screenshot? It's possible that there's a bug in how it's done with Advanced Study set to "Both" but with your normal study set to just one, but I want to see for myself first.

CleverClogs   July 14th, 2013 6:17p.m.

Several screenshots just sent to your email.

BTW I notice some of the Advanced Study settings stick, others don't.
I'd personally like it if all altered Advanced Study settings remained active until I reset them. It's likely I'll want to study the same subset of lists for a couple of days or weeks in a row.

I noticed in the screenshots you sent that the screenshot is taken on the first character of the word, but the first character is not different between simplified and traditional, only the second character. Did you see the indicator show up for the second character?

None of the Advanced Study settings actually stick, by design. There have been several threads about this, but we prefer keeping it this way so that users don't unintentionally get into strange states where they're only studying some subset of their items without realizing it.

I see the problem in the code now. I've added a bug ticket to get it fixed for when we do the next iOS app update. For now, if you want the simp/trad indicators, you'll have to set your normal account settings to either "Both" or "Traditional and Previously Added Simplified" for it to show the style indicators, even if Advanced Study is set to "Both". Thanks for the bug reporting!
