Efficient way to set sentences

atdlouis   September 7th, 2013 2:38p.m.

I'm trying to set sentences for all of the words in My Words that don't have one currently assigned.

1) Why isn't the most popular user-generated sentence set as the default example sentence? I'm finding that if I use the app, lots of words have no example sentences. But if I use the webpage, I'll see a sentence. The difference being it's user-generated. It would be nice if it was selected by default, and I'd only have to change sentences if I didn't like it.

2) What is the best way to sort all my words so that I see ones without sentences, such that I can most efficiently go through that list and set sentences?

3) Why can't we set sentences in the app? Is that planned in the future? Is it limited real estate? I'm using the iPhone app. Is this feature available in the iPad app?

totally agree with point 1 & 3 - need a default sentence setting that makes sense and an option to change, thanks

Also, I understand you can select multiple sentences, and they will be displayed randomly. I wish I could select multiple sentences within the app.

basically he said it wouldn't be a good experience to do this on iOS etc.

The sentences aren't currently redownloaded when they change on the website, so you probably have an old copy on your iOS app. I'd do a clear local data to get the most recent sentence downloads. As the sentence corpus matures, this step will be less important, but you probably have only a small fraction of the sentences you would have with a fresh download, since we've been making a lot of changes.

If you want to create a lot of sentences, I might be able to rig up a script and email you a list of your words without sentences. There's not currently a way to do that built into Skritter, though.

Maybe if we ended up with a lot of good sentences such that a sentence chooser popup on iOS would be very useful, we'd add one. What we don't want is people typing in sentences (with segmentation and punctuation and all) on their iOS devices; would suggest the web version for the new sentence creation.

Just cleared the local data and redownloaded everything. Now there are a lot more sample sentences, which is awesome.

I understand it's maybe too much to do sentence input on an iphone or ipod touch. If you ever split the app with an iPad version, it would be worth consideration. But I still think it's almost necessary to be able to select other sample sentences. I'm doing the app, and the default sentence for a lot of words are not the best, and I'd like to be able to see what other sentences are out there without resorting to the website.

Also, what happened with the add words feature? I used to be able to press the green plus sign, and then be able to select how many words I wanted to add. Can't do that anymore. Now it just adds one at a time.

I took about a year break for my 1st year of law school; now I'm getting back into the swing of Chinese studies. I'm taking advanced Chinese at the NYU undergrad school, which is pretty awesome. Skritter has helped me so much; I'm taking the class that's targeted for heritage speakers, and I've only studied for 3 years.

You double tap the green plus to get the multi add.

Good to hear that you're rocking your advanced Chinese course--I'm not surprised at all!
