UI request: More visually prominent "trad"/"simp" prompts

kl   October 8th, 2013 12:50p.m.

I've used Skritter for a while, but I recently switched from just studying traditional characters to studying both traditional and simplified (using the iOS app on iPad). I'm finding it pretty inconvenient to have to specifically look for the tiny "simp" or "trad" text (which is of course not always there, and is not always in the same position when it is there, since it moves if the character is new) to know what form to write a character in. When I have a bunch of either to write in a row, I often get in the habit of writing that type, stop looking, and then when one of the other type comes up start to write the character in the wrong form.

It would be very helpful to me if these indicators were more visually prominent (whether by default or by opt-in). The easiest way of doing this, I think, would be to have a big 简 or 繁 somewhere to prompt the user to write simplified or traditional. I don't care if it looks elegant, I care if I can notice it without having to specifically look for it, because that would make Skritter more usable for me.

I agree. We need a better design for this, especially now with the sample sentences overlapping that area often.

I'll think about this. It is a tricky problem, which is why we don't have something good yet, but the current design is pretty bad.

Also, it'd be nice to be able to see if a word is trad/simp even while studying only one of the sets.

most people are studying simp. and seeing the word 'simp' on every single screen is a little annoying. just my opinion.

Not on every single prompt, just where the variation is actually different. But right, it should be an option.

Showing simp/trad indicators even when you're not studying both is what it accidentally does in non-advanced-study-mode right now because of a bug in the last update, and I've heard enough complaints about it already, so I'm fixing it and not making an option to turn it back on.

I actually like the current level of notification, not too intrusive.

At first I used to get tripped up but recently seems like my brain just sees them unconsciously and writes the correct form.
