[OT] Ubuntu 13.10 and IBus

Schnabelhund   October 20th, 2013 9:57a.m.

Anyone else facing severe problems with IBus after the latest upgrade? Not only can it never show the Panel, but it also doesn't show any candidates. This is the first time I'm going to downgrade an OS.

If you were going to upgrade to 13.10 and were going to use IBus, stop right there; that would make IBus almost useless. There are many complaints about this already, so I suggest you wait until this is fixed.

LTS ftw.

Schnabelhund   October 20th, 2013 5:00p.m.

Yeah, I'm probably going back there.

Pretty much every non-LTS Ubuntu needs to be interpreted as being beta software. But as me and that other guy in the topic you linked state, UbuntuKylin 13.10 works fine once you figure out how to enable an input method through fcitx. (There are no default input methods -- you have to go into the settings and choose one. I chose Google Pinyin.)

Oh, you're the OP? Haha, what a small world this is!

I'm curious, are there pinyin-traditional and bopomofo-traditional input methods in fcitx? I guess Japanese easily exists. An intelligent Jyutping method with compound words would be nice, too.

Yes, I was surprised someone on Skritter found my post, which by now has been buried under mountains of other topics. :P

If you use Google Pinyin, you can change between Traditional and Simplified easily. I use traditional Chinese with Google Pinyin. By default there's only a couple of Chinese input methods included with fcitx, but searching in Synaptic I found many others, such as sunpinyin, chewing, anthy, cangjie, and jyutping. I don't see anything explicitly labeled as bopomofo, but I have a feeling it's in one of them somewhere.

Sounds neat. Although I've chosen the path of going back to an old build, I guess I'll switch to UbuntuKylin if IBus won't be fixed by the next LTS build.
