Flash player

stelingo   February 21st, 2011 5:50a.m.

I am using IE9 and have problems using Skritter since installing it. I am also unable to view video clips on other sites. I downloaded a newer version of flashplayer, but this hasn't solved the problem. I still get a message on Skritter saying I need flashplayer, but it disappears too quickly before I can read which version. Please help.

Well, the version you'll need is just the most recent one. Try uninstalling flash in the control panel, then reinstalling? If that still doesn't work you could try installing a beta version (although these wont automatically update, so you would need to remember to do that).

Otherwise, does it work in other browsers? Chrome?

I've been off IE since Chrome was developed enough to work fluidly with all of my browsing needs, so I'm taking a bit of a stab here: I believe I've heard that IE9 is still having trouble with a lot of sites for some reason. It could simply be that IE9 hasn't quite figured Skritter out or something... Like Byzanti suggested, the first thing I would do is test an alternative browser (and Chrome would be my strong suggestion), and if that works, you know it's something with IE9 (or your installation of it, or its Flash version...)

Incidentally, I would imagine that if you updated Flash on IE9 it would be the most recent version, so unless Flash doesn't work fluidly with IE9 yet, it seems like it should work as well as IE9 will let it.

Also, there's always the classic solution of clearing your cache/temporary internet files/history in your browser and then restarting it.

I've had reports of IE9 bugs already, so I believe the browser is simply not stable yet (it's not officially released yet after all). I remember looking into it and deciding it would be better to wait until Microsoft fixed things on their end before I try and make fixes here, otherwise my fixes may well break things later on. I'd recommend using IE9 when you can, but have another, stable browser available until IE9 is fully functional.

I have been using chrome recently and Skritter works fine on it. But in general I prefer IE but many sites don't work properly. Thanks for your suggestions.

It was necessary to download a beta of flash to get it to work with IE9. The beta was of 10.2 and it was fairly old, August or so.

It worked fine but there were some bugs, such as the little periodic encouragement messages staying on the screen.

Outside of flash, the pinyin didn't wrap for long head words. That's more of a problem really and probably worth skipping on IE9 until the guys have made Skritter compatible or IE9 is fixed etc.

The good news is the flash is very fast. Faster than Chrome even.

I downloaded the beta flash but couldn't get it to work, so gave up.
