Simplified Chinese Comics on android

agmakosz   August 10th, 2011 12:20a.m.

Curious if anyone knows about or has recommendations for comics and graphic novels available in simplified Chinese for Android phones or tablets either through the market or elsewhere. I tried out a comic called Valentine in simplified characters that i found in the market and really liked the experience. I'd definitely like to read these kinds of things more often, but I'm not sure where to find a larger collection or what's good.

Great reading practice that isn't too tough or heavy.

Would like to read some too. I did download the app 睡前故事 for children on the Chinese android market but I doubt it can be found on the international android market. Haven't. been usng it much but it's easy to read, contains hundreds of stories.

Thanks Elwin. Your comment made me think to go get my android phone from China and see if I could get the market app on my tablet in Canada. No problem!
Anyone wanting to access the Chinese app market can download the market app from this link:
http://www.goapk.com/pkg/cn.goapk.market

Or can just browse the Chinese market for direct downloads from the site at:
http://www.goapk.com/index.php

After a little browsing I downloaded this app ( http://www.goapk.com/pkg/cn.ibuka.manga.ui ) on my tablet here in Canada, which has now given me access to lots of comics in Chinese, though i am still seeing lots of traditional characters.
Any recommendations would still be appreciated. Hope these links help some other learners.

I'm in Kyoto right now, and I just bought a one-year pass to the Kyoto International Manga Museum, which has a massive manga collection, and I'll be spending some time in the simplified Chinese sections! If you're using manga as a stepping stone, materials in simplified characters are great, but if you're a die-hard comics fan, you might consider studying traditional characters.

I'm not sure which formats you can find, but Dragonball (七龙珠) is a good choice, because even though it's translated from Japanese, it's main inspiration is the Chinese classic novel Journey to the West. Since it's aimed at young teens, the reading level isn't too bad. At the same time, it's a good stepping stone to reading classic Chinese literature, such as the Journey to the West. I read the first 6 volumes myself, in traditional characters.

Yotsuba! (四叶妹妹), an all ages comic, and Nana, aimed at young women, are fantastic, just realize that they chiefly concern Japanese culture.

Two Taiwanese artists that I like a lot are Tpcat (http://www.tpcat.net/) and Akru (http://akru.blog13.fc2.com/), and they're both very approachable if you go to any Taiwanese comic expo. Tpcat has witty animal comics aimed at adults, and Akru's work is informed by her training as an anthropologist.

Thanks very much Chris!
I will definitely go check out those recommendations.

A mainland artist to check out is 姚非拉 (Yao Fei La) - I've had fun reading 80°C and 夢裡人 (Person in my dreams) at the manga museum.

姚非拉 is featured in the brand new mainland comics magazine 天漫: http://hn.rednet.cn/c/2011/08/19/2352708.htm

Another artist featured in that magazine, who's collaborated with 姚非拉 in several ventures, and has made it big in Japan as both a manga artist and model is Xia Da 夏达. A popular work of hers is 子不语 (Confucius Did Not Say).

Also check http://www.mandmx.com

He has bilingual English/Mandarin comics, often with the theme of foreigners in China or learning Mandarin, so it's quite useful!
