Weird behavior with Android app

copypaste   August 10th, 2014 6:33p.m.

On the Android app, my lists don't sync right at all. I hit refresh but it just goes around for a while then stops with nothing different. (Also, side note, it would be great if there was a progress bar, I mean come on.)

It gives me words that I am studying, but that are really old. I notice that on any day that I just use the Android app I don't learn anything, and I never get any new words, even though my settings are to add words "Fast".

Anyone else have this problem? Really annoying, makes the app unusable for me.

Do you mean your lists don't show up at all or you're just not seeing new words being added from them?

Right now the auto adding feature hasn't been implemented in the Android version. You'll need to manually use the plus "+" button while you have actively adding from list.

Alternatively you can add words from the website version and then use the sync button from the Android.

I mean that the words that are due for me on the website don't match the ones that are due in the app. Even the number of items due is different.

I have this same issue, Skritter on Android doesn't sync for me at all unless I delete all the data and then re-sync. Unfortunately I recently switched from iphone to Android so I mostly stopped Skrittering (after 1.5 yrs of daily use), only using it when I'm at home on my old iphone. Since it's still in alpha mode I'm assuming it will improve in the future....until then I'm taking the time to focus on some other areas of Chinese. It's probably good to mix it up a bit anyway :-)

Thanks for the feedback. I'd like to get a little bit more information about the deterring factors keeping you from using it or at least "comfortably" using it. I'll include my comments about the issues you've mentioned below as well.

Is the largest deterring factor that fact that the due count isn't displaying the same value?

The order of items due between the website, iOS and and Android versions should all differ slightly. This is because each client locally applies a random factor (ios and android to a greater extent).

In general I would say to ignore the due count that is displayed in the Android app. It is a locally calculated value that doesn't accurately reflect server values. It's something we're working on, but it requires a lot of rethinking in terms of how Skritter syncs data.

@thatsnice, have you been using the android app (https://plus.google.com/communities/111086959218179130279) or the html5 app (http://html5.skritter.com/)?

thatsnice   August 12th, 2014 12:10p.m.

I've been using the Android app, I didn't actually know about the html5 app.

For me, right now the site says I have 354 items due, the iPhone app says I have 326 items due, and the Android app says I have 577 items due. I thought this meant that the Android wasn't syncing properly but based on what you're saying, it's just an issue with the display count -- because I'm doing reviews on my iPhone, that only affects the server count and doesn't get passed through to the Android. So basically I should stop bouncing around between the 2 phones :)

One question, though, if I continue on with 2 devices, will the Android still reflect what reviews are actually due? I don't mind just ignoring the due count if it's otherwise prompting me correctly.

Thank you!

@thatsnice, The more important thing is to make sure study time is getting added to your account. If study time is getting added then that means reviews are getting saved. You can even turn off the due count on the Android study settings page if it's distracting you with wonky values.

Studying on two devices is perfectly fine supposing you're not rapidly switching between them. If you do switch it's best to manually press the sync button before studying, though it should resolve issues automatically.

I am adamantly working on new user on-boarding and when that is completed it will address most of these issues. Right now new users and even existing users can easily get lost in all of the numbers and displays.

I don't care about the values as long as I still study words that are due. The fact of the matter is that when I study on Android I only get words I studied weeks and weeks ago, not any new words I studied yesterday.

I've been using the Flash version via VNC which sucks because no audio, but at least I get the right words. :(
