"Words studying" pop up box

Lawnmower16   May 13th, 2011 10:58p.m.

Today while I was studying, I had an idea.

When I'm using Skritter, I very often pull up the kanji details box to see the meaning of the kanji, the other readings of the kanji etc. Another reason I pull that box up is to hopefully see other words I have it in. But, the problem with that is, it only shows you 4 common words, which you may or may not be working on.

I think it would be really nice if there was a way to pull up a list, on the fly, that shows you either all of the words you are currently studying, or all of the words currently in your queue, using that kanji.

This would be really helpful to my studying because I know that countless times I have come across a word with a familiar kanji that I knew I had seen somewhere else, but I couldn't for the life of me remember where. Being able to remind myself, quickly, then and there, could do wonders for my recollection abilities.

That's a good idea, I just had a chinese character which I saw in a word yesterday, and hoped to find it in the box and add it to a list. I also think being able to look up many words that are somehow connected by meaning or character would be great. Because of the structure of Skritter your mind is constantly thinking of connections.

Good idea! Very often I want to do this too. And then I have to copy-paste the character in question into mdbg to find the words that I already (supposed to) know with that character.

great idea, then I wouldn't have to go to www.mdbg.net as often.

We do hope to make that list of containing words pageable, so that you can see more of them if you want, although it might only incidentally include the words which are in My Words (as opposed to only including those). Will possibly include it in the prompt itself, although not sure on that. Anyway, it needs some work. We're waiting to redesign most of the word popup at once, though.

I sure hope so. I use that feature so much. It would be phenomenal if I could use that pop up to see what other words I'm studying.

The paging thing would also be helpful when I'm trying to work a certain character better by adding words from the pop up. More often than not, none of the words in the pop up seem like words I want to study, so I have to go elsewhere to find some good ones, then add them manually. Takes away from the meaty studying time, so having more options there would be great.

My earliest self-study Chinese trick involved copying the dictionary.

If I knew more than half of the characters in a word, I copied both it and the English definition of it.

My teacher (a high school student) would then go over my notebooks and ask me to define words that were written there or try to help me come up with sentences involving words written there.

Considering the total lack of formal methodology, real classes, or textbook, I learned a surprisingly large amount of Chinese and built a really good base for when I actually started studying.

Prior to starting on Skritter, my infrequent study habits (mere usage /= study) still included a modified version of that where I would only copy out the Chinese dictionary entry.

I, for one, would LOVE to see a list of all the words on Skritter that include THIS CHARACTER. Since I'm using Skritter to improve my ability to write without consulting my cell phone (and improve my astonishingly horrible tones) skrittering a dozen or twenty words that involve one character would be extremely valuable for me.

You can see all the words you've added that contain a character actually, but not from the popup. If you go to the My Words page and search that one kanji character, you'll get the list. Not as convenient as the popup but perhaps you could have the my words page on a separate tab right next to your study tab.
