Option to display traditional/simplified alternatives

thinkbuddha   September 22nd, 2009 4:58a.m.

Hello,

I'm planning at some stage to launch into traditional characters, although I want to cement my knowledge of the simplified a bit more first, or I'll end up deeply confused. But I was wondering if it would be possible to have an option, when marking characters right or wrong, to show the simplified/traditional variant.

So, I'm practising 马 and I get it marked right. To the left of the window it says

Ma 马
Horse

But it would be nice to have the option to display

Ma 马
Horse
(Trad: 馬)

Similarly, if I was learning traditional, then the reverse would be the case. This would be a way of developing a kind of initial familiarity with traditional/simplified variants, and help with moving from one to the other.

All the best,
Will

I'll definitively like that.

Ooh, that would be kind of nice..

I'd enjoy that too. I live on the mainland so simplified is a must, but I think the traditional are pretty and I'd like to increase my exposure.

We are trying to design it into the new prompt interface which we are building in the next couple weeks. I think we can figure out a place for it, although it might be small or in a tooltip or something. But we definitely gotta have it.

真是個好消息。

Ha, see this is why I need more exposure: I had no idea what that third character Weibosi wrote was!

I love this idea as well.

I'm not planning to learn nor to use simplified but I'd definitely love to know some more equivalences, especially when the simplified form is very far from the traditional one like 業 (业) and 藝 (艺)
