How does remix work?

Zeppa   November 4th, 2011 7:16p.m.

Following another thread, I am remixing the list for Conversational Chinese 301 so it is like the second edition. This seems to be a better idea than banning words.

How can I remove a word from the CC301 list without banning it? Just uncheck the four testing methods? And once I have whited them out, how do I make them green again? And add another word to the list - just leave the remix mode and use quick add?

Thanks in advance. This is a wonderful program - I'm glad for all the work, but I don't understand it all.

You just go to a list section and click 'edit this section' then you can take out all the words in the list you don't want without banning them.
They just won't be in the list.

To remove words from a list, don't bother with banning them (this removes a word from your studies now and forever - not very useful if you want to study it in the future), and don't alter which parts of it you're studying (again, this is permanent, and also an unnecessary amount of clicking). All you need to do is remove the word from the list. You can do this by remixing the list.

Remix isn't a mode. When you remix a list, you simply are making a new list, using the other list as a starting point.

So let's say you have the CC301 official list. You can't edit it - that is, you can't add or remove words from the list. But if you remix it, it's no longer the official CC301 list; it's yours to do with as you please. At first, the contents will be identical, but you can make whatever changes to it that you want; this means adding and removing words, adding and removing sections, renaming sections, editing the description of the list, 等等. You can change the words by clicking on the little pencils next to the names of the sections when you are viewing the list.

I hope this clears things up. Being able to manage lists and the contents of those lists is really one of the great things that makes Skritter work so well.

One small clarification: you can always un-ban words later by going to your "Banned Words" page.

The important distinction is that editing a list effects local changes - removing a word from a list doesn't affect its appearance in other lists - whereas banning a word effects a global change - if you ban a word, it's banned from all lists.

Thanks very much, GrandPoohBlah. this remix is really good. But I find it hard to identify such eatures from the FAQ.
I understand that I can ban and unban, and I understand that if I remove a word from a list it will only affect that list. What I don't understand is how to do it.

Is it right that I can't add other words, e.g. those in the second ed. of the book? I would have to add those in a separate list (have done this before).

I will just have to click around, because my question is: how do I technically remove those words? I got xiexie all whited out and couldn't reverse it. I was hoping someone could tell me how to remove a word altogether and how to know I've done it, but I will resort to trial and error.

Zeppa   November 5th, 2011 12:21p.m.

Actually, xiexie has gone on reloading.

If I go to the contents of the list and choose chapter 1, I see the list - each word has a box to the left of it. What happens if I put a tick (check) in that box? Does it mean I'm removing it?

Ad to re-add a word I would have to start remixing again, which is OK as I haven't got very far yet.

Ok. To edit a list, go to Vocab Lists > Made By Me (you can only edit Made By Me lists) > [Name of your list that you want to edit] > Contents and click the little pencils next to the names of the lists. From there, it should be obvious what to do.

Zeppa   November 5th, 2011 2:25p.m.

Ah! the pencils. I didn't think of clicking on those. I clicked on the words 'Chapter 1'. Thanks, everything is clear now. Obviously intuitive to younger people that a pencil would be clickable.
