Study entire lists and not having to learn all words

krovy7   January 31st, 2012 7:44a.m.

I have created some word lists. When I study them, the words will keep repeating until I have learned them and then move on to more words.

Is there a way to study all of the words on my list without needing it confirmed that I have learned the first group of words. I want to practice all of the words in any given list whether I have perfected them or not.

Is this possible, or do I need Skritter to see that I have learned words before it shuffles through the rest of the list?

There are two things you can do. First if you want to add more words quickly you can press the green + button on top of the studying screen to add a new word manually.

You can also choose to only study one specific list or even only cram a specific section. To study only one list click "study one list" underneath "study all" on the main study page and then choose the list you want to study.
If you only want to cram a section of a list you have to navigate to that section of the list and then click the "cram" button.

inkubus has it. You can also go to a section, select all the words in it, and use the "Study in Scratchpad" action to go through all those words once without any spaced repetition at all.

Thanks for the advice inkubus and nick..., I have used the "Study from a single vocab list" button and it works just as I would like it to.

I have a another question.

As for when clicking on the "?" in order to see how a character is written, Skritter will display it correctly and then it will disappear shortly after beginning to write it.

Is there a way to adjust the amount of time the correct writing of the character is displayed? It would keep me from having to click the "?" more than one time for characters that I find more difficult to learn.

No, there's no way to adjust that. We've found that, counterintuitively, you don't learn anything if you can see the character at the same time as you're drawing. This tracing effect was so strong that we made the character fade away very quickly, forcing you to try to remember it.

If you really want to lean on the Show button, though, keep in mind that the "S" key also triggers it--easier than hitting the button.

That was bothering me as well, so what I ended up doing was binding the "S" key and the "X" key (for Show and Erase) to the lowest two buttons on my tablet, which made it a lot easier to get the outline to reappear, although unfortunately it seems that making it reappear and fade out that rapidly introduces some extra processing lag that can sometimes make your strokes fail to be recognized. I just slowed down a little and it solved that problem; I think I have a tendency to try to write strokes too fast for the program anyway.

How I have been using the show button was to click the "?" with my tablets' pen which shows the entire character, then fades it out. I do not find looking at the writing too quickly like this helps me to learn (my memory is far from photographic).

What I have come to find out that if I press and hold the "s" key, I am able to see only one stroke at a time (I had always used the pen to tap the "?" and was unaware of this). This is very helpful and takes a lot of guesswork out of writing.

Binding the "s" key to my tablet is a great suggestion, valymer. Thanks! My only gripe, which is minor, is that in order to display only one stroke at a time, I must tap & hold. When this is not done correctly the entire character is then displayed.

Thank you, Nick for the prompt response. Your earlier suggestion to use scratchpad works great. How many words can scratchpad handle at one time? I tried to add a whole list of 200 and got an error.

I used to find the character "running away" too quickly annoying, but now I believe that it really does work, whereas "tracing" characters doe not. I also like to use tap on the "?" and hold to reveal one stroke at a time, and try to challenge myself to finish the character with a minimum number of hints.

I am not sure--it's not meant for studying more than a few dozen, really. You'd have to try it and see. I would think it could hold a hundred.
