Word of the day email

葛修远   March 10th, 2012 12:52a.m.

Just an idea, imagine it could be a pain to implement:

Could Skritter send a daily "word of the day" email for each user? So it would select a word from "my words" and send you a little email with it, just for added exposure.

It could choose the word randomly, from what you've studied recently, forget a lot etc.

It's not going to make a huge difference, but you know, every little helps.

I'm guessing the biggest obstacle would be performance as it sends out a bazillion emails each day?

Try these:

http://www.mdbg.net/chindict/chindict.php?page=feeds

It's not as cool as having a word directly from your studies, but in the meantime...

Thanks!

Yeah I really am looking for something customised to me. I'm trying to build up as many ways as possible to get exposure to my vocab list wherever I can.

Currently working on a PHP script run by cron on my own server..

It's a good idea, but if you have even just 2000 words it will take over 5 years to get through them all. I think a better suggestion would be to send out the word (or words) with the biggest leech score, to try to shame you into remembering the little bugger. Or maybe you could set the level at which it happens, so that words at 90% get sent to you or notify you in some way.

(Either way I'm guessing the outcome will be: "computer says no" ;-) )

Yeah I'm in no way expecting it to let me learn all of my words easily (currently have about 9000 in the list). But if it makes me remember one more word a day, it's useful in my view.

Ok here's a simple script that will do this, if anyone's interested:

I like that idea. Although perhaps on the Skritter main page or something.

Oh man, yeah that would be motivating!

Hmm. Tough to query to get the word with the biggest leech score, but perhaps we could get one that's pretty leech-y more quickly. I like the idea. I will add it to the list, although I can't move as fast as 葛修远 on this one!
