i found a very good book for learning characters, it uses a different approach and has worked well for me alongside skritter. its called 'learning chinese characters' by tuttle publishing.

There is a vocabulary list for the characters of this book that goes up to Chapter 19 that has been around for a long time. I have created a second list for the characters for Ch 20-40 and published it. If you just want the characters, it is there already.

A strong point of the book is that it covers HSK A in a sensible order for learning the characters and has many of the merits of encouraging a structural understanding of them in the style of Heisig.

At some point I should really clean up and combine and officialize some of the textbooks that have been submitted as custom lists. You can access this Tuttle book in several parts here:

Does anyone work on a list with all compounds given for many characters included? It would make sense to learn some words with the characters you already know and you get all the compounds stipulated for HSK A....

I used the one by gmmorenito for the first 19 chapters : the other lists seem incomplete. I needed the last 21 chapters so I added all of the characters in chapters 20 through 40 including the non-HSK elements that have pronunciations.

My plan after finishing chapter 40 is to go through the HSK A list that is included as a Textbook. This list has all of the compounds but in a different order.

It would be good to have the compounds in Tuttle order though it is not important enough for me to actually enter them.

I have also used this book extensively. As with other methods for learning characters with "stories", I find that making up my own stories based on their general criteria works best for me.

The element that is different about this book, and makes it better than others I have checked out, is that they work out a story based on the elements in the characters and then ADD a line to the story that suggests the pronunciation and tone.

Highly recommend.
