items remaining - weird?!

santacarladrums   August 30th, 2012 3:12a.m.

Sometimes when I'm Skrittering on my ipod the number of remaining items to be studied drops dramatically. Any idea why Skritter is skipping to-study items?

Also, it's probably been asked like a bazillion times already, but a less clunky way to add and edit items in you list in the app would be all kids of awesome.

same happens to me when i am skrittering on my laptop in china.
and my explanation for this drop or rise imn number is that skriter constantly needs to calculate a and this includes the characters you are just writing now...

It's not on the iOS app, but the best way to add items to a list is to press Shift-A anywhere on the website. Not sure how many people are aware of this...

@santarladrums: Are you updated to the latest version, 1.0.4? In 1.0.2, there were a handful of issues where some items wouldn't be able to be studied, so they'd get pushed back whenever they were encountered, causing the dramatic lowering of items to study. If it's just going down by no more than a few at a time, though, then that's normal, that's when items are being pushed back so you don't study the same word or characters in a word you just studied too soon.

'some items wouldn't be able to be studied'? What does that mean?

scott   August 31st, 2012 3:13p.m.

It means the app wasn't able to give you certain things to study because it didn't properly load the resources for them, so it skipped them. In a nutshell, the old version was buggy and should no longer be used.

I've noticed a bit of a reverse problem.

A few times it would show "Remaining items: 1", but even after I do 5 or 6 items, it would never clear to 0. I know items can come up again while I'm doing the "last" item, but I wouldn't expect over the time I do 5 items (I did them at normal speed, without taking a break).
I'm using 1.0.4.

@scott: Ah, thanks for clarifying.

scott   September 3rd, 2012 3:12p.m.

@nomadwolf: That can sometimes happen with items that were added. Skritter loads some words ahead of time, and when it's time to study a new word, there will already be one or two words ahead of it preloaded, and so those come first. The loading algorithm is pretty complicated though, so I'd really need to research in depth why it's happening on a case by case basis, but basically as long as the number does eventually go to zero within a few prompts it shouldn't be a problem.
