Thanks to all who replied to my prevoius thread about iPods, iPads etc. I've now taken the plunge and last night bought an iPod touch! Skritter was the first app I downloaded :)

I have a train journey today, so it will be a useful test. I'll let you know how I get on.

One thing - on the web application I can type the pinyin, and I find this helps me to remember it. On the app I don't seem able to do that - is that right, or have I missed a setting?

If you have a new coloured iPod Touch, then I am green with envy. I use my iTouch every day for learning Japanese.

You have made a great investment in your future educational attainment. Well done.

Make sure to manually add words before you leave, auto add doesn't work without an internet connection.

Right--we figured that it's too awkward to type a lot of pinyin on the mobile device, so we left it as a flashcard instead. Try to say the pinyin to yourself before you check the answer.

How do I add words manually?

junglegirl   September 26th, 2012 3:25p.m.

@Zeppa In study mode, tap the round green + icon once to add one word, or tap twice to get a dropdown with lots of options for numbers of words to add.

Click on the + symbol (top right) of the app. Click once for one word, or double click to chhose the number of words to add.

Thanks! (black and white plus for me)

Have to say, I quite like the app! It was really good to have it on the train, including working through characters in that bit where the train is due but not actually at the platform yet - being in the UK this meant I got down around 30 characters in what would have been 'wasted' time otherwise.

I'll still use the website as my main way to skritter, mostly because I know typing the pinyin is useful. But the app is wonderful for when I'm on the move.

To answer the question about the type of iPod touch, it's not a multicoloured one, I've got one of the older ones which have just come down in price as I wasn't sure I needed any of the features that the new one was offering. I think the one I have does more than I need.

I've also got a stylus on order, which I think will be helpful - not sure I completely like skirttering with my finger. It's OK, but I think I'm going to prefer a stylus.

But overall, very happy. Thank you Skritter!
