Where did the examples sentences go?

humalin   October 13th, 2013 1:26a.m.

I cleared all the local data in my IOS app in order to get the new database of examples senteces, but now all of them are gone.
What can I do? I can't live without them

lechuan   October 13th, 2013 11:25a.m.

I just did a clear local data, and after reload I see sample sentences.

Hmm; how many items did it list (and what size, in MB) when it said it was doing the initial sync, 湖安马林? There was a limitation where for the very largest accounts, it couldn't fit all the sample sentences into a 32MB sync blob, so it started to not fetch sentences for the items downloaded after the first 25K. But it should still fetch them for the first 25K.

malaili, I'll try turning them off for you. Next time you do a clear local data, they should be gone. (Although I've had problems with this workaround in the past, so it might not work.)

@Nick
Im pretty sure it didn't reach 25MB, it was around 18.
Yesterday I did a large review session and indeed there are stilll some sentences but the mayority of them got deleted (maybe around 90%).
I've been checking many of the example sentences with my gf(chinese) and most of them were right. Why delete them?

@Malaili
It is essential to have context when learning new words, specially in languages such as chinese, where you have many words with similar meaning but only context can tell the difference.
Right now comes to my mind all the common words involving the character 盛 in them.

humalin   October 14th, 2013 4:37a.m.

I see most of the definitions in the web version but not in the IOS one.

For example these three, before they appeared on the IOS app, after clearing local data, gone...

How many items did it say it was syncing? (The other number during the sync, not the MB.) That would tell me whether it somehow hit this limit even though you should be under the threshold.

humalin   October 19th, 2013 12:41a.m.

Nick, It was around 45000. I,ve noticed the new words I've been adding these week come with sentences but not the ones that I updated while clearing local data.

This limit means that maybe 3 months from
now I won't be able to download new items into the IOS app?

nick   October 27th, 2013 8:18p.m.

We'll have to figure out some other way to split the sync up soon, because yeah, we have a hard limit at 32MB per sync. You can fit a lot of items in if you don't include sentences, but the sentences really fill it up. Hmm. Sorry; I don't have any short-term fixes for you to get more of the sentences downloaded there.

You will be hard-pressed to fill up 32MB of sync without sentences included, though, so I wouldn't worry about that any time soon.
