Mnemonics on android ap

stelingo   October 16th, 2014 6:06p.m.

I just downloaded the android ap and had a go for a few minutes. My first impression is generally positive. However one thing which I would like changed is the placement of the mnemonics. They appear on the panel under the character information. This makes them rather pointless if you can see the charcter. Any plans to change this?

Hey stelingo, I hadn't really considering it too much until you just brought it up. But it does make sense if you're actually wanting to read the mnemonic as a hint before reading the answer.

Generally when I'm studying I look at the mnemonic after if I have forgotten it and also done poorly on the prompt. I feel if I use the mnemonic to help me remember it beforehand then I'm more likely to mark something correct that should be wrong.

A possible solution would be the hide the writing on the info panel until it is either tapped to reveal or the prompt has been completed. What do you think about that?

I agree that the mnemonic is usually used when you don't immediately recall the character. However, displaying the answer defeats the purpose of looking at the mnemonic as an aid. By looking at the mnemonic your brain still needs to do some work in order to come up with the right answer.

I really like the solution used in the iOS app: you tap that that little arrow, which popups up the mnemonic without revealing the answer. If I'm able to get a correct answer after looking at the mnemonic, I often choose "So So" instead of "Got It", as a way to remind myself I need to work on that character a little more.

Why not go for a similar approach on the Android app?

Another reason why I prefer the IOS app is that the mnemonic is given for each character while on Android it's for the whole word (often two characters or more) which doesn't make that much sense.

Josh, what do you mean exactly by hide the writing? I already have it set to hide pinyin and hide reading.

mcfarljw   October 18th, 2014 9:56a.m.

Sorry for the confusion originally I was talking about potentially adding in a feature that also hides the reading on the information panel. It's not something currently exists, but thought it might help solve the problem.

After talking with the team I think we're going to figure out a good way to add a "hint" button the prompt screen. When pressed this button with show you the mnemonic and any other relevant information that might help with answering the prompt.

I have opened an official issue for it here:

A hint button sounds great. Thanks.

Any progress on the hint button?

Hey stelingo, it's still on my todo list and has also been requested by a few others. I'd expect to see it show up in an update in the next week or two. I got a little behind because of the extra work that went into introducing kana for Japanese users the past few weeks.
