What wacom device? and Windows 8?

Romy1993   February 11th, 2014 5:46a.m.

Hey everyone! My first time posting here..
I got a new touch screen laptop about a month ago and even though it all works great with basically everything i can't use the touch function for skritter. The laptop runs windows 8.1 so i was wondering if skritter plans to release an app for windows 8.1 anytime soon or if it would be a better idea to buy a wacom tablet so i don't have to use my mouse.
If the answer is no, could you guys maybe advice me on what would be the best wacom device to buy solely for the use of skritter. I dont do photo editing and that sorta stuff so thats unimportant.

Thanks in advance!!

Romy

From my experience Internet Explorer seems to be the best browser for touch support when Skrittering (believe it or not) on Win 8. If you haven't tested it out yet, give it a go!

As far as Wacom pads go, the "Wacom Bamboo Connect" would be ideal (and is the cheapest pad they make): http://www.amazon.com/Wacom-Bamboo-Connect-Tablet-CTL470/dp/B005HGBEYS/ref=sr_1_62?ie=UTF8&qid=1392143977&sr=8-62&keywords=wacom+pen

Thanks so much for your reply! I tried to use internet explorer with my touch screen but i still can't just draw on the screen...and as far as i know there isnt any software to enable that. The wacom tablet you recommended is unavailable in my country, however this one isnt: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00ECWM3MA/ref=s9_simh_gw_p147_d14_i1?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=196E8NDM8FMK5F9986F1&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=455344027&pf_rd_i=468294
Does anyone have any thoughts on this one?

Win8/IE10 and touchscreen work fine "out of the box" (or did last time I tried), but Win8.1/IE11 and touchscreen do not.

Following workarounds get the touchscreen working in Win 8.1:

Wouldn't bother with a wacom personally, either just use your touchscreen or get an ipod.

Thanks so much! I clicked on your link and eventually found something that makes the touchscreen work! I have to make my computer think it's an android device and then it totally works! Just a question..are there any default settings for skritter so that it always immediately goes into android mode?
This is the link provided by Nick. I would like to study seperate lists but this link only goes to study all words in android mode.

Any help would be appreciated!

I already found it! Thanks everyone for thinking with me! ;)

Skritter Team,

Is native support for Windows 8.1 touchscreens coming?

nick   February 23rd, 2014 1:27p.m.

ricksh, my plan was to figure out the user agent stuff a little later on to trigger the 8.1 touchscreen handling automatically without needing the ?android=true workaround. Is that all that is needed, or is something else going on?

Given its touch orientation, the http://html5.skritter.com/ app will likely be the way to go for touchscreen devices.

Hi Nick,

Not sure if is just user agent, first time open IE11 works fine with ?android=true, but if do anything that means it has to reload skritter writing box (e.g. change study parts in settings popup), ?android-true usually doesn't work: closing and reopening IE usually doesn't fix this, restart of computer usually does (or sometimes shutdown and fresh start). Changing IE11 into Windows Phone mode works most consistently so I don't do the restarts anymore. Basically its a bit buggy, and ?android=true is a little fragile too.

The only other minor thing that isn't working well on win8.1 touchscreen is the example sentence. On normal computer you hover the mouse over to bring up pinyin and translation, and on older android tablets that run online version you can side swipe in to bring up the same (and it stays open when move finger away), but the side swipe is not working on windows 8. Again, you can kind of get there by holding you finger on it to read, but sliding finger away to blank space before opens example sentence box, so just letting you know rather than an urgent fix.

Above is not too troublesome once get used to it (but a little distracting for new users maybe?) - still vastly prefer online skritter due to all extra info on screen (hence haven't moved to html5 version), although I usually use ios version daily too, each has its place.
