export problem

jww1066   March 21st, 2011 7:19p.m.

I have used one of Byzanti's techniques and have added custom definitions to many words, many of which are example sentences (from before they were available as part of Skritter). This morning I did an export of my words and, while most entries look like this,

格魯吉亞 gélǔjíyà Georgia [traditional]

I saw many entries like this when I had a custom definition:

根据 gēnjù according to; based on; basis
文章的~=the basis of the article [simplified]

This is a problem when trying to import the words into Anki or Excel, because the newline starts a new record.

Is this a new problem? I don't remember this ever happening before.

One potential solution would be to replace newlines inside definitions. Another would be to add some kind of quoting mechanism (like CSV does with quotation marks) but I'm not sure what would be compatible with Pleco, Anki, and Excel.

Ages ago I mentioned this to Scott and he sorted it out (carriage returns were just deleted from the export). They must've wormed their way back in again...

How's using your own sentences working out for you?

Well, I stopped adding them a while back when example sentences were rolled out. I see no point in reinventing the wheel.

Hmm, I vaguely remember that Byzanti, not sure what happened to the change. Probably lost in the reorganization of the export function along with pretty much everything else over the fall.

I've put it so that any mnemonics or definitions with multiple lines will have quotes put around them. This works for a Google Docs spreadsheet and Anki and am pretty sure it will work for an Excel spreadsheet, though I can't test it right now. Don't know about Pleco. Fix is uploaded, let me know if it works for you.

@scott Sorry it took me so long to check this. Unfortunately it looks like the export is now brokener. If I export any number of words, even 10, it counts up to the requested number and then sits there without displaying anything in the export area. There's also a JavaScript error:

["jww1066"]
jquery-1.5.1.min.js:16Uncaught TypeError: Cannot call method 'indexOf' of undefined

Same here. Export seems to be broken now, nothing appears in the textbox.

Oops, I had tested exporting mnemonics but not the other ones. It should work fine now, sorry about that.

Seems to be fixed now, thanks!

Yep, it works, thanks a lot!
