How to add 俗话 with a comma

meihui   March 27th, 2011 7:34a.m.

I wanted to add the proverb 公说公有理,婆说婆有理 meaning "each says he (or she) is right; it seems we each have a point", but the dictionary didn't like the comma and just stated, that it can't find "公说公有理" which is only the first part of the proverb. Shall I just omit the comma? But that is also not correct...

My suggestion would be not to add it to Skritter at all. It's long and will bog you down every time it comes up in practice. A flashcards program might be a bit more suitable?

I'm just not very good with flashcards ... Even though I have some custom-made flashcards on my iPad, I can rarely motivate myself to use them. I learn better through writing. Right now I study with the book 高级汉语口语 and would like to add all words and phrases from this book. At this stage I feel that learning 成语 and 俗话 is most important to me. Other expressions from the book like 清官难断家务事 and 家家有本难念的经 are already in the dictionary, so why not add other long phrases? Ok, the characters are easy and I actually don't need to study this phrase, but in the future I might bump into some other proverb with more complicated characters and a comma ...

Try adding it without the comma. I had a similar instance a while ago with a different long suhua, and discovered that a form with no comma in the middle had already been added to the dictionary.

Go ahead and add it, you can note the comma in a custom definition if you think you'll forget it, 'A,B' might do.

As Byzanti said, don't hesitate to delete it if it slows you down. I've studied lots of phrases, which can be nice for a change of pace from the non-stop short prompts.

I think custom example sentences will fix this problem when they come.

You might also be able to add the komma in the pinyin. I have never tried this, but you can for example add "..." in the pinyin.

Would it maybe even be possilbe that down the road those ellipses also show up in the characters?
so at teh top of the page it would look like: "_ ... _ _ _" or if it's not a writing prompt " 对...感兴趣".

Many thanks for the helpful advice! Yes, adding the characters without the comma, but putting the comma in the Pinyin and/or definition will do the trick.

I don't think we are going to want to deal with the complexity of having punctuation in the writings like that; sorry guys! That code is hairy enough. It does work with the reading and definition, so I like to match up my ellipses or commas in those two fields.
