Where is your girlfriend from? It might be a little different, but I don't think it's wrong.

院 starts with the close front rounded vowel [y] (denoted in pinyin as "yu"). But Skritter adds an extra close back rounded vowel [u] to it.

My girlfriend (a native of Beijing) says she thinks the pronunciation is normal.

Try comparing the readings of the word 醫院 and the single character 院 and see the difference. One of the 院's must be wrong.

Note: I'm using the Web version and don't have access to any iDevice. Is Skritter using the same audio file for both versions?

It's funny you bring that up, because I had massive problems in the past to get taxi drivers understand the word 醫院. (I was living next to one so the ride home always required me to tell them.)
So I feel there is something different in what a typical Taiwanese will expect this word to sound like :)

Lots of weird Beijing accented stuff. Wish we could buy an addon pack and get Taiwanese pronounciations :(
