Does anyone know if it's possible to type simplified characters using Bopomofo (注音符號/ㄅㄆㄇㄈ) ?

I did a brief google search but didn't find anything. I know that this input method is generally only used to type traditional characters, but if possible I'd like to use it for simplified characters as well.

I'm told yes. I don't use it though so can't tell you how.

Yes. Using Ibus in Linux. Ibus supports bopomofo, pinyin, canjie, wubi and many more input methods. For bopomofo and pinyin, switching between simplified and traditional is just a click away.

I was hoping that there would be some hidden secret way for me to do it by adjusting the settings on my language bar. I've been playing around with it and it doesn't look like there a way to do it that way.

Hey guys, I just found out something sort of funny. I can actually type simplified characters using the exact same settings and input method as I do when I type traditional characters with Zhuyin. I don't even need to switch between simplified and traditional.

Very interesting. How? Can it be switched between simplified and traditional? Otherwise, it would be inconvenient to type the following: “繁体字”的繁体是“繁體字”。

@Pts there's no switching involved. For example, when I want to type out both 體 and 体 using Zhuyin, what I do is type ㄊㄧˇ , and then the first thing that pops up is 體 . If I want to type out the simplified version using the same input method, I just have to search for it in the list of possible characters that come up for the input ㄊㄧˇ . In this case, there are actually only 7 characters, so spotting 体　is really easy.

For some characters, however, spotting the simplified character can take a few seconds, so this is definitely a slower way of typing characters than pinyin. One more disclaimer I want to add is that I have seen a couple of instances in which the simplified variant of a character wasn't in the list, as is the usual case. One of the characters is ironically very frequently used : 學 .
So it's not perfect, but I'm still enjoying it.

What input method do you usually use ?

I use 'pinyin' in Ibus since I often have to type both simplified and traditional in the same passage, and it enables the switch between them real easy. Selecting characters from the candidates make the typing dead slow. I don't think I can type anything nontrivial with this method.

With Windows you might look at soft keyboards which can map your keyboard to zhuyin for simplified or traditional.
