Mnemonics... Consistency?

lechuan   August 27th, 2012 8:18p.m.

I find the mnemonics section neat, but the actual names assigned to character components seem to be somewhat random. Some seem to use Heisig Keywords/Style, others Matthew's Keywords/Style, and others that I'm not familiar with.

For example, one might mnemonic call a component a slingshot, and another call the came component a short-tailed bird.

Is there anyway to control/filter the mnemonics you see by what keywords they are based on?

I tried out the website to see how it handled mnemonics, and I noticed that there are multiple mnemonics to choose from (or add your own). I didn't realize that before as I had only been using the iOS app.

One idea might be too have a drop-down list to classify each submitted mnemonic (ie. Heisig/Hoenig/Matthews).

Also would be cool to have a seperate mnemonics field for pronunciation (also with a drop down list to specify the type (ie. Matthews).

The in preferences, the user could specify the type of mnemonics they'd like to get, and also set the default type they'd submit from the app.

I think that adding this kind of metadata to the mnemonics is more overhead than it's worth. There is something to manually choosing the mnemonic that makes sense for you, as we can do in the web app and hopefully the upcoming iPad app (not sure yet).

For most words and characters, if you set it to prefer Matthews mnemonics, then you wouldn't get anything, or would get something that's not as good as the non-Matthews top mnemonic that everyone else picked for that one.

i assume that the heisig mnemonics are the most popular, and on my iphone what mnemonics i see are usually from heisig (i think), but i am studying hoenig.

is there a way to set it so i only see hoenig mnemonics. i would rather get a blank and input my own than have mathews or heisig show up.

also, i notice that on the iphone i only get one mnemonic 'story' but when i study directly on the laptop there are several choices (and often a hoenig choice amongst them).

Just a thought, if mnemonic selection were to make their way onto the iPad (which would be great), it would be very useful for these to be available while offline. In that case it may possible be less overhead to download the top tagged mnemonics vs. downloading all the mnemonics for a character.

I personally use a Heisig mnemonics for meaning and Matthews for pronunciation. Matthews is the only published/popular pronunciation/tone mnemonics system that I know of. My suggestion was to have two seperate mnemonics, one for meaning, the other for pronunciation (that can be mixed and matched as per user selection).

Different idea in here:

That would potentially make this implementable.

What style of mnemonic is used for 淹 (A *big* man got an *electric* shock in the *water* and _drowned_.). This is one of the best mnemonics I've come across personally. Would like to be able to see all the pneumonics on the iPad/iPhone app and select the one I deem best but I realise this may be complicated. Don't use the web for practicing - just the apps.

That isn't a Heisig, Hoenig, or Matthews style mnemonic, but rather a general, component-based mnemonic. michau probably just looked at the character, broke it down in his head, and penned the masterpiece mnemonic, using a common Skritter convention for indicating component meanings in *bold* and the character definition in _italics_.

We may do something like that in the iOS app when we implement the example sentences there, but not sure. Not many people have expressed interest in choosing other mnemonics while on the iOS devices, and it's not so straightforward to do, as you guessed.

I would like to express my interest, then.
