Gap between Normal and Fast adding too wide? 2

ErikHaze   September 25th, 2012 5:32p.m.

Hi!

I'd like to talk about the gap between normal and fast adding. It was already mentioned in this thread:
http://www.skritter.com/forum/topic?id=92054834

I think Nick already adjusted it according to the user wishes. However, for me, the gap is still to wide.

When I use normal and use Skritter about 1 hour, I have about 20 new items or less. When I use fast, I easily reach over 100 items in 1 hour.

So fast is way to fast. But normal is a bit too slow for me. The gap is really huge! I'd like to have about 50 new items in 1 hour. So many user use the manual add. But pushing the green button is quite slow, because when I press it, I have to wait several seconds before I can press it another time. So if I want to have 50 new items instead of 20, I have to press the button for almost a minute, which can be annoying.

I don't know if I'm the only one with this problem. Perhaps others might share my opinion. In that case I would suggest to adjust it a bit. Here are some suggestions:

1) Add a "very fast" mode, that equals the current "fast" mode. The new "fast" mode would be between the current normal and the current fast.

2) Slow down fast.

3) Add a "scroll bar" in the option to offer everybody the possibility to adjust the add frequency to everybody's taste.

4) Add a second plus sign in the study mode, which adds 10 items with one click.

I'd be very glad, if I'm not the only one who wishes an adjustment and if such adjustment would be possible.

Thank you very much!

I didn't adjust it, actually. I'll slow down "fast" on beta to try that out. Please study on beta for a while and let me know how the new speed works out for you.

> Also isn't the number of new additions a function of correct responses?

Yes, in normal you have to reach about 100% to get new characters. And then it's up to you, it you continue with items less than 100%, with the effect, that you get several new characters. Or you make a break and continue later, when you have several items due again. So when you split your reviews, you'll get less new items (on that day).
I hope I understood it correctly.

> Some days, I don't get any new items

Do you learn everyday? If not, you will work a lot on due items and don't reach below 100%. I learn everyday. My due reviews are usually done after 30 minutes. And then I want to learn new items :-)

On the link in my first posting, Nick explains when items are added. I copy paste the explanation:

>>>
The available adding frequencies are given as:
.9: Fast
.7: Normal
.6: Slow

So if you are set to fast, then items will start adding (very infrequently) as you get below 130% (1.3) readiness, speeding up until you can't get below 90% readiness.

And if you are set to normal, then when you're at 100% readiness, roughly 6.25% of your reviews will be new.
>>>

I suppose Nick changed the beta fast to .8. Thanks Nick! I will try to out :-)

Just chiming in: I like the speed of fast as it is.

Liverix, are you aware that you can press and hold the green button on iOS, in order to get a drop down menu for selecting how many words you want to add?

ErikHaze   September 26th, 2012 3:36a.m.

I don't use iOS, only the web app.

I studied about 6 hours since you changed the speed. And I really love it! The speed is now perfect for me :-)

Thank you very much for the change!

Ok, now I have another problem. Now suddenly it's way too fast! I had it on beta fast for a week, and it was fine. But I have gathered so many new words, that I have to work on them for several days, without adding new words. I changed the speed to manual. But Skritter still adds new words! Even when I still have a lot of words due. Skritter added 20 new items in the last 10 minutes. But I still have almost 200 words due (haven't used Skritter for 10 hours). I suppose Skritter shouldn't add any words when I'm due so many words. Especially when the speed is set on manual. I have the problem in beta and also in the normal version.

I'm drowning in new items!!! :-o

Can you set it to slow. Or manual and then you are in control and can study old stuff without adding new.

liverix, when you say that it added new items, did you see the little message at the top of the writing area where it tells you, "Added from Some List to My Words", or do you just mean that you're seeing prompts which are marked "New writing", "New reading", etc.?

It definitely shouldn't be doing the first one (actively adding) while you're in manual, but it's likely that you will keep getting new items for parts of words that were added previously but not studied yet because you were working first on other parts for those words.
