German Dictionary

Hi,

is the German Skritter-Dictionary available for download somewhere?

I think the dictionary skritter uses is the handedict and as far as I know there is no download for that.

But be careful, HanDeDict is full of errors with about 10 - 20% of the entries totally wrong and about more than 50% problematic. It seems that they allow users to make "corrections" without any checking, so it gets worse and worse (e.g. I recently found 鹤, he4, to be translated as Kran instead of Kranich, I assume somebody just translated the English crane without really looking at the character, you have a lot of such entries there, which seem to be translated from English to German without careful checking).
Skritter (like Pleco) used this dictionary, but over the last 2 years there were more than 5,000 corrections done, all checked against dictionaries.
I have not found any reasonably good German on-line dictionary (leo.org has a very limited scope), I mainly use printed dictionaries.

Since HanDeDict uses CC BY-SA (share alike, http://www.skritter.com/legal) I was hoping that everyone could benefit from those corrections...

Pleco has the German HanDeDict available as a free download.

there is also bab.la (http://de.bab.la/woerterbuch/deutsch-chinesisch) I use to look up words in all three of them (leo, handedic, babla) and try to get the essence of the words.

wb, if you want, we can provide our corrected version of HanDeDict under those terms. We don't try to seed things back to HanDeDict because we typically just cut down a lot of definitions and change the formatting, so it's not usually stuff they'd want. What would you like to use it for?

wb   January 6th, 2013 1:37p.m.

@nick that would be great! I work on a German list of keywords (like Heisig, but free), I did the first 1500 ones using HanDeDict but I think the skritter dictionary might be better for the next 1500+ (like you said, cut down definitions and also more entries...)

I've sent it to you. Hope this helps!
