Custom Word Lists For Your Review

george   March 27th, 2009 5:10p.m.

I should have done this a while back, but the 25 custom/themed word lists that we created have finally been put together in one Google spreadsheet. We ran the lists by our most trusted of sage professors, and she did the initial round of correcting. But before we made them available as vocabulary lists on the site, we wanted to let everyone interested look at the lists and correct or add things as they see fit.

We were definitely helped while making these lists, and we put the appropriate attributions on each sheet. Thanks to those of you who contributed.

Here's the link and good hunting:

After people have mauled it sufficiently I'll unshare the spreadsheet and we'll upload the lists so that you can add and study from them inside Skritter proper.

A word I hear frequently from my Chinese wife is 笔记本儿 meaning laptop/notebook. In the dictionary I normally use I, however, can't seem to find it. Has anyone else heard this term in use (possibly more used in the North, i.e. Hebei and Beijing, than in other parts of China?)?....if no one else has, it's probably not worth adding :)

That all looks quite impressive and I can already see a few lists I will be adding to basket...
I was wondering whether anyone would be interested in those single characters which stand for the provinces in China? And speaking of which would it be interesting to have a list of all the provinces?

Agree - province list with single characters would be good. Maybe a similar thing with major cities and their abbreviations.

Have heard the term 笔记本, whether in study or real life I can't remember.

Hey Baifameizhong, a provinces list would be pretty cool. My knowledge of Chinese geography is practically 0 so maybe such a list would encourage me to start orienting myself.

I added a provinces tab based on the above link. I corrected the short character for Shanghai and added explanations from various sources.

Regarding the kung fu one, I had a suggestion. It's a pretty honking list, so what if we split it into two sections. Maybe a movie one and a "practical" one.

That huge martial arts moves list seems most relevant to tournaments or movies about tournaments. Most of the time, the "moves" in movies are made up anyway. If we split the list that way, it might make it easier to get through one or the other, or both.

What do you guys think?

Incidentally I made a couple additions to the kung fu list. I added nunchuck, Brigitte Lin and Run Run Shaw.

We'll need to split the martial arts list up into several sections, and people can pick the words that they want to learn from the sections. So it's best to have sections that people might want to learn less at the end, in case they want to just start from the beginning and go through the most useful stuff first and then stop.

The smaller sections are, the better. (Maybe around 20-40 words per section is best.)

This is looking good, guys!
