Chinesepod Lists

阿福   September 6th, 2011 12:33p.m.

The vocab lists for Cpod lessons are not loading; presumably because of the server problems over there? Please keep an eye on this problem?

I have the same problem with the android app for chinesepod, new lessons are not being added and I can not update the lesson status. I suspect that they have a server problem.

laurenziano   September 6th, 2011 3:29p.m.

Yes, I guess they have any; since this morning I'm having problem to login to ChinesePod. The browser returns a message telling me the site does not have a valid certificate. I've noticed that on my PC the address is now http://www1.chinesepod.com/ but I've never seen that "1" before the "www".. Is it the same for you?

I guess this may cause the browser does not recognize the site; and possibly even this malfunction with the lists may be related with that. I've written to CP but still had no reply.

Sorry to use this space for something not directly related to Skritter, but, in a way, it's a little relief founding someone else having some problem with ChinesePod today. Anyway, I hope it's nothing serious and they will do something soon...

Speaking of the ChinesePod lists, the order of the words in the lists is usually "random". Is there a way of having the words in the lists be in the same order in which they appear in the pdf files? Who is preparing these lists?

CP claim (Facebook):

Hi everyone, we're having some hardware issues with the site at present, but our dedicated tech team is on the case and everything should be well and good very soon - our deepest apologies to everyone this morning!

I noticed the same thing with www1.skritter.com, laurenziano, when I investigated the errors that were coming up last night. I switched the API to point to that domain and it seems to work fine now, though the other domains appear to be fine as well today. I'll leave our API pointed to www1.skritter.com for the time being at least.

@swimming: We use the order of the words that we automatically get over the API. We're using their very first API still, though, and they're going from version 2 to version 3 now it looks like. Once the latest version of the API comes out I'll be doing some much needed updating of how Skritter links up to ChinesePod, and that should fix the order issue among others.

@scott

when you do this

"updating of how Skritter links up to ChinesePod,"

could you also address the following issues (assuming they are issues and it's not just my incompetence):

- allow chinesepod lists to appear in the menu where we can choose which list a word from MDBG goes into (good work there BTW - not much use to me at the very moment but will doubtless be essential in a few weeks).

- it seems that choosing words from CP lists has a bit of a first-in-first-out flavour -- I seem to get words from newly added lists more quickly than from older lists. If so this could be documented/customized.

I'm not sure if we can have Chinese Pod lists updated via the quick add. The lesson lists are static, just whatever ChinesePod gives us, and making copies (remixes) is prohibited so that ChinesePod users are the only ones who actually have access to the lists. As for label lists, I'm not sure if the API will allow us to modify your labels so that you could add words to your labels through Skritter through MDBG (mmm what a delicious confluence of services that would be), but I'll see what I can do.

As for studying lists, huh I'd never thought of that but yes that should be tweaked. That just happens because new lists that you're studying, or the latest ones you've changed rise to the top and the top most ones are the ones that are added. To force them into the right order I'd say study the individual lists as they come in, making sure one gets entirely added before moving on to the next one.

swimming   September 12th, 2011 6:39p.m.

What are label lists? Where can I find information on them?

scott   September 12th, 2011 8:40p.m.

In ChinesePod you can create labels and assign them to words, they work like tags. More information can be found at the ChinesePod site. The tags you've created will show up here on Skritter when you look at the available list of ChinesePod lists.
