Added one lesson and weirded out Skritter

Dennis   September 18th, 2011 8:15p.m.

I have done it now ;<. I had planned to add one lesson at a time from "Rapid Literacy in Chinese." I didn't want to be overwhelmed by new vocabulary since I haven't studied Chinese in years.

Tonight I finished Lesson 2 and Lesson 1 and 2 were now listed as DONE. I went into "vocab lists" and then "Sections to Add From" and checked off Lesson 3 to start on it. Lesson 1 now appeared as a lesson to add from. I tried to get back to where I started from and things got worse.

I went into "vocab lists" to list of changes to see if it contained a record of what I had done. Not so. I guess this list is for some other purpose. It didn't look right, though. The headers didn't seem to jive with the data. Maybe, it's just that I don't understand it.

At any rate, maybe I've got myself in the position where I have no new words to review today. I should have taken the warning about not having enough words in the queue to heart. Perhaps this will straighten out tomorrow, at least partially.

As a short term work around (so that you can review stuff today if you feel like it) until this is sorted out, you can just go to section 3, scroll down and click 'study section'.

It's not ideal since you're only studying this section then and nothing else, but if you have nothing due now normal studying would be pretty much the same anyway.
I'm also relatively sure that words you study that way will be added to your study and come up normally for review.

I went to "vocab lists" and checked off Lesson 3. Now Lesson 1 is listed as "Adding", Lesson 2 as "Done" and Lesson 3 is now just white.

When I went to "Study" there was nothing to "Review", but it gave me three words and then stopped.

Dennis, what you did was say to Skritter, "I want to skip everything except Lesson 3". So it went and deactivated your Lesson 1 and 2. To help us understand--why were you thinking that you needed to uncheck all the other lessons? We need to make this situation more transparent, it seems.

I think the best thing for you to do is to activate all sections of Rapid Literacy for Chinese, tell it to start at Lesson 1, and then go to the study page and hit Add until you get a new word from Lesson 3. At that point, go to your account settings - study settings:

http://www.skritter.com/account/settings-study

And change Section Movement to Stop Adding from List on Section Complete. Then whenever you finish a section, you'll have to manually reactivate the list before any new words will be added again from the next section.

To begin with, I checked off Lesson 1 and unchecked all other lessons. "Add Vocab from" was set to Lesson 1. I wanted to study Lesson 1 until I had finished it.
When I had finished Lesson 1, I checked Lesson 2. So now Lesson 1 and 2 are checked and "Add Vocab from" is set to Lesson 1. The system now started to add words from Lesson 2 and review from both. So things are working as expected ( by me ).

When I finished Lesson 2, I checked Lesson 3. Lessons 1, 2 and 3 are now checked and "Add Vocab from" is still set to Lesson 1. This is when things stopped working for me.

I was unfortunately not aware of the "Section Movement" setting on the Settings page.

Thanks to both you guys. I followed your procedure, Nick, and everything is now hunky-dory. It went pretty fast.

I'm a programmer too and I know that users (me in this case) are adept at breaking things

Perhaps you should somehow unify the method of setting lists up.

What would work better for you, I think, is choosing the option 'going to next section manually' in your profile.
That means that when you finish a section, this list is paused, so when you want to move on you just need to unpause the list on the study page or in the pop-up.

We'll be integrating a change or two to make this a little more intuitive for next time. Thanks for your feedback, Dennis, and sorry for the hiccups!
