any more development on shared piks?

Aurora   November 24th, 2011 6:50p.m.

There was a topic on this a little while ago - any way we can have this as an option?

I am getting more 6 year old students on my reading program, and likely to get more - I just dont have the time to upload piks for each student - but Skritter is a really important part of the program - it has worked wonders for my daughter (who started Skritter at 5.5yrs old). I no longer have the time to keep up with uploading piks for my daughter's new characters anymore (as her characters just grow at an exponential rate). So Skritter is not happening for her either at the moment, but I really dont want her to stop as it helps kids to network characters to their brain...

How can we make sharing these possible?

Cheers!
Donna

We'd love to do more with this, but it's not a tiny feature, and we're really trying to push on this iPhone app, so putting other features like this on hold, unfortunately.

How many pictures have you uploaded so far?

Aurora   November 24th, 2011 7:34p.m.

Hi Nick,

Yes I understand,I am eagerly awaiting the iphone app, it is all I have on my Santa list!!!

I think only 45 piks uploaded - just checked she actally is up to 163 characters on her reading level and I have not uploaded a pik since - time has just gotten away from me and to Skritter these new characters would be so valuable for her.

As they get a little older, even just changing the definition to a BOLD one worded definition relevant to what they have learned in their reader may help - but not a good long term solution for them, a pik helps them to associate the character they are meant to write.

Even if you could get the 45 piks to be shared (my daughter's account is 'Rory' - that would be great and I can get my new students signed up with Skritter!!

If there was a chance of getting more piks of mine shared - then I would set a day aside for loading the piks for the next levels of reading...then they would be in place also for my new students.

Cheers,
Donna

Hi Nick, just had a look, there are 51 piks uploaded. just about to add a few more.

Rory   November 24th, 2011 10:30p.m.

Aggh, sorry that message was from user Aurora - I was in my daughter's account.

Donna, I don't think we're going to do anything with this soon, but I'd hate to see the kids go without Skritter. I'll write a quick script to copy Rory's custom definitions over to other accounts, so that you would just have to let me know the usernames of the other students, and then I'd run the script and they'd have the same definitions (pictures and bolding) as Rory.

Would that do for now?

I don't understand, what are "shared piks"?

Hayleiw   December 1st, 2011 6:46a.m.

Nick that would be great. Sorry not got back sooner but things hectic. But on receiving this suggestion I was able to show a couple of my 6 yr old students today in class how to use Skritter using my daughter's account. Their parents will be signing them up soon, as soon as I get their log on names I will privately email you.

Cheers!

Do I understand right, that it is possible to put pictures into the definition of characters? How is that possible? Or is it something else?

scott   December 1st, 2011 9:26a.m.

Yes, both definitions and mnemonics can have images inserted. Add the text:

And you're in business. Example:

I tried it. That is awesome! You should write somewhere that this is possible. I would have never known if I hadn't read this thread.

By the way: Do you have some sort of manual? The faq is nice, but not really a manual if you know what I mean.

Is there a way to upload pictures to scritter? The way Aurora wrote gives the impression.

scott   December 5th, 2011 10:19a.m.

The FAQ and demo and occasional 'more info' links are how we try to explain the site, rather than having a separate manual that few people read and more easily gets out of date. I'm not sure given this strategy how we would tell people about inserting pictures into definitions and mnemonics, though. Ideally, we'll have this new system later which will be easier to explain, and this current system is only temporary so there's something until we build the new one.

You can't upload pictures; that will be part of the system later, probably.
